Varna Dosh, Vashya Dosh

In the system of Gun Milaan, the koot (aspect) of Varna carries 1 point and the koot of Vashya carries 2 points. Let’s see what these koots are and what their relevance is, in the system.

Staring with Varna, the 12 zodiac signs have been divided into 4 categories. These categories are called their Varnas (classes). Here are the Varnas assigned to different signs.

Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces are classified as Brahman Varna according to Vedic astrology.

Aries, Leo and Sagittarius are classified as Kshatriya Varna according to Vedic astrology.

Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn are classified as Vaishya Varna according to Vedic astrology.

Gemini, Libra and Aquarius are classified as Shudra Varna according to Vedic astrology.

Brahman Varna is considered as the most superior among all Varnas; followed by Kshatriya Varna, Vaishya Varna and Shudra Varna respectively. The system of Gun Milaan follows the rule that if the Varna of the male is superior or equal to the Varna of the female under consideration for horoscope matching, 1 out of 1 point or Guna is assigned for Varna matching. However, if the Varna of female is superior to the Varna of male, 0 out of 1 point or Guna is assigned for such Varna match. In such case, Varna Dosh is formed. The Moon signs or Raashis of male and female under consideration for horoscope matching are taken into account for matching Varnas.

For the sake of convenience, here is the points table for Varna matching.

Formation of Varna Dosh may disturb the marriage of the couple and such couple may be incompatible with each other. The reason assigned to such allotment of Guna for Varna matching is that in order for a marriage to be good, the Varna of husband should be superior to the Varna of wife. A husband with superior Varna may be well capable of taking care of his wife as well as managing and guiding his wife.

On the other hand, if the Varna of wife is superior to that of husband, he may not be able to manage and guide his wife. Hence the couple may face problems in their marriage. Therefore, a score of 0 out of 1 is assigned in a case. In total, there are 16 probable combinations for Varna match between a male and female; and 6 out of these 16 combinations qualify for 0. Hence in these 6 cases, Varna Dosh is formed.

Moving on to Vashya, Vedic astrology assigns Vashya to each one of the 12 zodiac signs. These Vashyas are called Chatushpada (quadruped), Manava (human) or Dwipada (two-footed), Jalchar (water animal), Vanchar (wild animal) and Keet (ant). Here is how the Vashyas are assigned to the 12 signs:

Chatushpada Vashya is assigned to Aries, Taurus, the 1^st half of Capricorn and the 2^nd half of Sagittarius.

Manava Vashya is assigned to Gemini, Virgo, Libra, Aquarius and the 1^st half of Sagittarius.

Jalchar Vashya is assigned to Cancer, Pisces and the 2nd half of Capricorn.

Vanchar Vashya is assigned to Leo.

Keet Vashya is assigned to Scorpio.

Based on the mutual compatibility of the Vashyas of male and female; a score of 2, 1.5, 1 or 0 is assigned. The system of Gun Milaan believes that the Vashya of male should be superior to the Vashya of female under consideration for horoscope matching; in order for the couple to enjoy a happy and compatible marriage. Hence 2 out of 2 Gunas are assigned for Vashya match if the Vashya of male is superior to the Vashya of female.

On the other hand, if the Vashya of female is superior to that of male, the Gunas assigned to such Vashya match start decreasing in the order in which the Vashya of the female is superior to that of the male. In some of these cases where Vashya of the female is far superior to that of the male, 0 out of 2 Gunas is assigned for such Vashya match. Vashya dosh is formed in such cases.

The reason assigned to such allotment of Gunas for Vashya matching is that in order for a marriage to be good, the Vashya of husband should be superior to the Vashya of wife. A husband with superior Vashya may be well capable of taking care of his wife as well as managing and guiding his wife.

In order to get to the bottom of such allotments of Gunas for Varna and Vashya, we need to understand the social system of the old times; when the process of Gun Milaan was formed and used. According to the social setup, each gender as well as class had defined duties and they were not supposed to perform actions outside the defined boundaries.

Looking at genders; let’s understand the roles of males and females in the old times. Males were responsible for earning money as well as for protecting their families; among other things. Females were responsible for raising families and taking care of them; among other things. According to the need of this system; females didn’t need much formal education since they were supposed to be housewives. Hence they were instead motivated to learn domestic skills which could help them do their jobs more efficiently.

Since the jobs related to financial matters and security matters were assigned to males; it was assumed that they should not be influenced by females in such matters; in order to do their jobs in best possible ways. Hence if a female belonged to a superior class, she might take charge of the marriage. It meant such female could advice or influence her husband in matters related to finances and security. Apart from that, such female could ask to become an active part of profession. These aspects were not considered good for females, during those times. Hence a female having Varna superior to that of the male was considered a bad Varna match.

The same reason holds for Vashya matching. Accordingly, maximum points were assigned when the Varna and Vashya of male were superior to those of female whereas minimum points were assigned when Varna and Vashya of female were superior or far superior to those of male.

This system might have worked well in those times; based on their social and cultural systems. However, in the present times; the roles have changed. To be precise, there are no fixed roles. Hence a female may be a police officer and her husband may be a chef. However, the marriage may still work well. Likewise, a woman may be a doctor and her husband may be a businessman. However, the marriage may still work very well.

It means the society which formed these rules according to the need of their time; has changed and it has changed a lot. This changed society can’t do well with the same old rules and the rules need to be changed. Hence Varna and Vashya koots may not carry that much importance in today’s world; as they might have carried during the old times.

Everything changes with time. Accordingly, the concepts of Vedic astrology and their applications should also change. If we keep applying the same old rules to a highly changed system or society; such rules may not give us good results; in most cases. On the other hand, if we modify the rules and make them suitable according to the need of the time; they may serve us much more value.

Hence horoscope matching is not the same as it used to be and it needs to be done differently. An astrologer should look into all the factors which may be generally or specifically important; on case to case basis. Only then it should be determined whether two natives may form a good couple or not.

Manglik Dosh in Eighth House

The eighth house of horoscope represents the immediate family of spouse, age, death, obstacles, accidents, losses, destruction, diseases, surgeries, crime, calamities, revolutions, murders, the occult, paranormal, supernatural, psychic perception, spiritual growth, secrets, mysteries, hidden operations, investigations and many other things.

Since the eighth house is a difficult to handle house, the formation of a defect like Manglik Dosh in this house may create problems which may be higher in quantum than the ones created by Manglik Dosh formed in many other houses of horoscope. For example, when Manglik Dosh is formed in the seventh house of horoscope, only Mars may create problems related to the significances of the seventh house and the seventh house may not create any problems for malefic Mars. However, when Manglik Dosh is formed in the eighth house; this house may also create problems, apart from those created by Mars as well as other planets which may be placed in this house. For this reason, Manglik Dosh formed in the eighth may prove much more troublesome than the same formed in many other houses of horoscope.

Once the formation of Manglik Dosh is confirmed, the next thing to check is its strength. The strength of Manglik Dosh is checked through the placement of Mars in various signs, nakshatras and navamshas. Apart from that, the influences of benefic and malefic planets on Mars; the overall theme of the horoscope and the running times may also affect the strength of Manglik Dosh. Let’s look into some of these factors.

The influences of benefic and malefic planets on Mars in a horoscope; as well as those of the overall theme of the horoscope and running times should also be checked properly, before predicting the results of Manglik Dosh. These are major factors and they can change the results; significantly or completely. Let’s take an example to understand this concept in a better manner.

When malefic Mars forms Manglik Dosh in the eighth house of a horoscope in Scorpio; there may be no benefic planet which may reduce the strength of such Manglik Dosh by virtue of its placement with Mars in the eighth house; without causing side effects or other types of problems. This is because the eighth house features hostile environment and any benefic planet placed in it; along with malefic Mars in Scorpio, comes under double attack. Mars as well as the eighth house may trouble such planet. This shows how difficult to handle the eighth house may prove in some cases.

Hence the solution in this case should come through other houses of horoscope and not through the eighth house. Suppose benefic Saturn is placed in the second house of this horoscope in Taurus.

Saturn is strong in Taurus and it casts direct aspect on Mars from the second house. Hence it may reduce the strength of Manglik Dosh to a significant extent. Accordingly the native may witness relief in problems related to health, lifespan and marriage. Suppose benefic exalted Moon is also placed with Saturn in the second house. In this case, the benefic combination in the second house may become very strong. Hence it may further reduce the strength of Manglik Dosh, thereby reducing its malefic impact on various spheres of life.

Suppose benefic Venus is placed in the first house in Aries. Venus adds strength to the first house and through the first house, it adds strength to the entire horoscope. Suppose benefic Sun is placed in the eleventh house in Aquarius, Mercury is placed in the tenth house in Capricorn, benefic Rahu is placed in the ninth house in Sagittarius, Ketu is placed in the third house in Gemini and Jupiter is placed in the fifth house in Leo.

In this case, the overall horoscope may become benefic or highly benefic; depending on the finer factors. Such horoscope may prove helpful for native’s health as well as for his lifespan. Since Venus and Jupiter are well placed; and the seventh house is clean; the native may be able to save as well as enjoy his first marriage; despite setbacks and problems from time to time.

So far, we have discussed the outcomes if Mars is joined by benefic planets. Let’s see what may happen when malefic planets influence Manglik Dosh in a horoscope. Suppose malefic Mars forms Manglik Dosh in the eighth house of a horoscope in Scorpio and Jupiter is also placed in the same house. In general, Jupiter works as a partly malefic and partly benefic planet for Aries ascendant type horoscopes; though the percentages of benefic and malefic parts may vary; depending on the finer factors and overall horoscope. Mars is stronger than Jupiter in Scorpio and the eighth house features hostile environment. Due to the combined effect of Mars and the eighth house, Jupiter may also turn significantly malefic. At the same time; Jupiter may add more negativity to Mars. Hence the problems posed by such Manglik Dosh may increase in number as well as in quantum. The spheres of health and lifespan may be hit most severely; followed by the sphere of marriage in case of female natives.

A female native having such malefic combination may witness delay in marriage. Hence she may get married late or very late. Apart from that, such malefic combination may break one, two or three marriages of the native; by virtue of horrible and traumatising experiences. If Venus is strong as well as clean; and the seventh house is either occupied by benefic planets or it is vacant; the native may witness relief. On the other hand, if Venus is also weak or afflicted; the number as well as quantum of such problems may increase a lot.

Suppose benefic Saturn is placed in the first house of this horoscope in Taurus, benefic Sun and Mercury form Budhaditya Yoga in the seventh house in Scorpio; Venus is placed in the ninth house in Capricorn, Jupiter is placed in the tenth house in Aquarius and Moon is placed in the second house in Gemini in Taurus navamsha of Punarvasu nakshatra. Suppose benefic Rahu is placed in the second house in Gemini with Moon; and Ketu is placed in the eighth house in Sagittarius.

In this case, the overall horoscope may be well equipped to control the damage indicated by such Manglik Dosh, on most fronts. The native may get married at proper age or with some delay (both male and female) and he may be able to save and enjoy his first marriage. He may not fall victim to addictions and vices; and the tendency to engage in extramarital affairs may reduce significantly. Even if the native engages in one such affair; it is likely to be a short term affair and it may not threaten the marriage of the native.

Let’s see what may happen when malefic Mars in the twelfth house is joined by other malefic planets. Suppose malefic Rahu is placed in the twelfth house in Aries along with Mars; and Angarak Yoga is formed. The addition of malefic Rahu may increase the number as well as quantum of problems created by such Manglik Dosh. Hence the native may suffer much more in this case.

Suppose Venus is also placed in the twelfth house along with Mars and Rahu. In general, Venus works as a partly benefic and partly malefic planet for Taurus ascendant type horoscopes; though the benefic part may be much higher. The hostile as well as no-limits environment of the twelfth house may further aggravate problems and it may increase the malefic part of Venus; even more.

This malefic combination is a potential and problematic yoga; which may cause damage in many spheres of native’s life. The involvement of Venus in this combination makes it especially troublesome for marriage (for male natives), health and lifespan. Venus rules the first house and it is afflicted by two malefic planets; and that too in the twelfth house. Hence the scope of damage caused by this malefic combination is vast. Venus is the general signifier of wife in case of male natives and Jupiter is the general signifier of husband in case of female natives. However, both husband and wife are specifically represented by the seventh house. Hence the lord of the seventh house represents both husband as well as wife.

When malefic Mars forms Manglik Dosh in the seventh house of a horoscope; the native may face wide variety of problems related to his marriage; depending on his overall horoscope. The seventh house directly deals with marriage. Both these planets may stand in direct opposition to each other. As a result, Hamsa Yoga may be weakened by Manglik Dosh and Manglik Dosh may be weakened by Hamsa Yoga. Accordingly, the quantum of problems indicated by Manglik Dosh may significantly reduce.

Suppose benefic Moon is also placed in the seventh house in Poorvashada nakshatra. Benefic Moon forms Gaj Kesari Yoga with Jupiter in the seventh house; and the primary benefits of this yoga may appear in the sphere of marriage. Benefic Jupiter and Moon may overpower malefic Mars. Hence the strength of Manglik Dosh may reduce a lot. The overall combination may become more benefic than malefic. As a result, the native may witness a number of good results due to this combination; in many spheres of his life. However, the sphere of marriage may still suffer though not seriously or very seriously in this case.

So far, we have discussed the outcomes if Mars is joined by benefic planets. Let’s see what may happen when malefic planets influence Manglik Dosh in a horoscope. Suppose malefic Mars forms Manglik Dosh in the seventh house of a horoscope in Sagittarius and malefic Ketu is also placed in the same house. The placement of malefic Ketu may significantly increase negativity in the seventh house. Hence the native may suffer more in the sphere of marriage.

Such malefic combination may delay the marriage of the native and it may also break multiple marriages of the native; depending on his overall horoscope. Whether the native gets married in time or he gets married late; such malefic combination may ensure that the native doesn’t draw pleasure from any one of his marriages. Hence if the native settles in this third or fourth marriage; such marriage may feature a number of problems.

The marriage may sustain, primarily because of compromises and not because of love or affection. It means that the native may get so tired of broken marriages that he may settle for whatever he gets and he may make any compromise it takes to save his marriage. Hence such marriage may exist on papers; but there may be no marriage in reality. Such malefic combination may absolutely deny the finest features of marriage like love, care, affection and understanding; unless there are strong benefic planets which create such features.

Suppose Venus is also placed in the seventh house in Sagittarius. Both Mars and Ketu are strong in Sagittarius and Venus is no match for them. As a result, both these planets may seriously afflict Venus; apart from afflicting each other. Hence Venus may turn significantly malefic in this case. Though all these planets may attack the significances of the other planets; those of Venus may be hit most severely.

As a result; the most prominent effects may be felt in the sphere of marriage and children. If this is the horoscope of male native; marriage may prove to be a disastrous sphere in his life. The native may face three, four or more failed and/or horrible marriages. The native may lose some of this wives to divorces whereas some others may be claimed by death. With this type of malefic combination; the first wife of the native is highly likely to die; unless there are strong benefic planets counteracting this factor

Such malefic combination may also trouble the native with problems related to children and these problems may be much more severe in case the native is female. Such native may witness more than one abortion or miscarriage and she may have to wait a lot; before she may give birth to a child. She may also face a number of medical complications while trying to conceive or after she has conceived. In an extreme case of this type, such female native may not be able to deliver even one alive child during her lifetime; though she may have some abortions and miscarriages.

Therefore, each and every aspect in a horoscope should be checked properly; before concluding the formation of Manglik Dosh in a horoscope or before predicting the type and quantum of malefic results indicated by it.

Hence this malefic combination may trouble almost each and every sphere of native’s life. Among these spheres; the sphere of health, lifespan and marriage (for male native) may be hit with maximum strength.

Looking at the sphere of marriage; such malefic combination is capable of breaking one, two, three, four, five, six, seven or more marriages of the native; unless there are strong benefic planets which save his marriage. The sphere of marriage may be completely destroyed in case of male native. Depending on the rest of his horoscope; the native may not get married throughout his life, or he may keep getting married and divorced or widowed. Such malefic combination may easily kill one or two wives of the native; especially the first wife.

Suppose a benefic combination of Sun and Mercury is placed in the second house of this horoscope in Capricorn, a benefic combination of Jupiter and Saturn is placed in the fourth house in Pisces, benefic Rahu is placed in the third house in Aquarius and malefic Ketu is placed in the ninth house in Leo. In this case; the horoscope provides support for lifespan of the native. Hence the native may live up to the age of 60 or more; provided Moon is placed in Uttarashada nakshatra in Sagittarius in the first house.

Uttarashada is ruled by Sun. Hence the native is born under Sun period with about 5 years of this period left. Sun period is followed by 10 year Moon period followed by 7 year Mars period followed by the periods of Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn and Mercury respectively. It means the native may get through the periods of Moon and Mars till his age of 22 years. After this age, the planetary periods of Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn and Mercury may rule him for the next 70 years, which means till his age of 92 years. Since all these planets are benefic in this horoscope; the native may live up to or beyond the age of 60 years.

On the other hand, if Moon is placed in the first quarter of Moola nakshatra in the first house in Sagittarius; the equation may change. Moon forms Gandmool Dosh in the first quarter of Moola. This defect may prove troublesome for native’s health and wellbeing as well as those of his mother and father. Hence the overall negativity may increase.

Apart from that, the native is born under Ketu period, with about 6 years left. Ketu period is followed by 20 year Venus period, followed by 6 year Sun period, followed by 10 year Moon period, followed by 7 year Mars period.
