Kaal Sarp Dosh

Like all other planets among navagraha, Rahu and Ketu can also be malefic as well as benefic in a horoscope. Though they can trouble you a lot when they are malefic in your horoscope, they can bless you with very good things when they are benefic. When one or both of these planets are malefic in a horoscope; they may form various types of defects in such horoscope; and trouble the native through them; in many spheres of his life.

Some of the defects formed by Rahu and Ketu have been named as Angarak Yoga, Guru Chandal Yoga, Grahan Yoga and Pitra Dosh. However, the most fearsome defect made by Rahu and Ketu in a horoscope is called Kaal Sarp Yog or Kaal Sarp Dosh which has twelve different types and which can trouble a native under its influence in a number of ways.

According to its prevalent definition; if in a horoscope, all seven planets except Rahu and Ketu are placed within the axis of Rahu and Ketu; Kaal Sarp Yog is formed in the horoscope. For example, if Rahu is placed in first house of a horoscope, Ketu is placed in seventh house of the same horoscope and the remaining seven planets are placed; either in the houses ranging from one to seven; or in the houses ranging from seven to one, Kaal Sarp Yog is formed in such horoscope.

Rahu and Ketu maintain a distance of 180 degrees from each other. Hence they are always placed in seventh houses (signs) with respect to each other. It means that if all seven planets except Rahu and Ketu in a horoscope are placed, only on one side of Rahu-Ketu axis, Kaal Sarp Yog is formed in that horoscope. Once formed in a horoscope, Kaal Sarp Yog can trouble the native with problems in almost any sphere of his life; depending on the type of this defect, which means depending on the houses of placements of Rahu and Ketu in such horoscope.

It is further added by some, that even if Moon lies outside the axis of Rahu and Ketu while the other six planets are inside this axis; Kaal Sarp Yog of lesser quantum or so to say; partial Kaal Sarp Yog is formed in the horoscope. The planets placed in the houses of placements of Rahu and Ketu are considered to be enclosed by them.

If the prevalent definition of Kaal Sarp Yog is to be believed, about 25% people or more across the globe are born with Kaal Sarp Yog in their horoscopes. Taking an example, starting from 1 April 2019 and going till 17 July 2020, Kaal Sarp Yog is formed in the horoscopes of more than 80% natives born during this time period; which extends to more than 16 months. It doesn’t stop here and this arrangement keeps appearing every now and then, for some months; as long as Saturn and Jupiter are separated from each other, by not more than seven signs.

This is because, only four planets among navagraha are slow moving. These are; Saturn which completes its transit through a zodiac sign in about 30 months, Jupiter which does the same in about 12 months; and Rahu as well as Ketu which does the same job in about 18 months. As for the remaining planets; the average transit period in one zodiac sign for each one of them is 50 days or less in general; with Moon being the quickest as it leaves a sign in less than three days.

Starting from February 2016 and going till September 2023, which is a period of about seven and a half years, Saturn and Jupiter will maintain a distance of less than eight signs from each other. Based on this equation and making an approximation; about 50% of the natives born during these seven and a half years may be affected by Kaal Sarp Yog; according to the prevalent definition.

After this occurrence, Saturn and Jupiter will again form this arrangement around December 2030, which is about 7 years from September 2023; and the same process of forming Kaal Sarp Yog in about 50% of the horoscopes for about 7 years will begin. Looking at this data, it can be concluded that Kaal Sarp Yog is present in about 25% of horoscopes, according to its prevalent definition.

All good and bad yogas are rare and they don’t remain effective for such long periods of time. Something which remains active for a continuous period of six months each year, over a period of about 7 years; is a norm and not a rare phenomenon. During a continuous period of six months; millions and millions of people are born. Some of them may be baggers whereas some of them may be billionaires. Some of them may suffer from various types of diseases whereas some of them may be very healthy. Some of them may be achievers in many spheres of their lives whereas some others may not achieve much in most spheres of their lives.

If a bad yoga like Kaal Sarp Yog is formed in a horoscope and it actually does the kind of damage which is associated with it; how can such yoga produce people living on the opposite extremes of most spheres of life? It seems like a misconception and so it is; since it does not give consistent results. To be precise; it gives volatile results which keep defying one another.

Since any defect when actually formed in a horoscope gives sustained results which may be bad or very bad but not good and bad; Kaal Sarp Yog also has to give sustained results in order to qualify for being a malefic yoga. This means that something has been left out from the prevalent definition of Kaal Sarp Yog. Let’s try to find out this missing piece of information.

Actual Definition of Kaal Sarp Dosh

For any defect to give malefic results or to be a defect to start with; the planet or planets involved in its formation must be malefic. It means when Rahu and Ketu are malefic in a horoscope and the primary condition for the formation of Kaal Sarp Yog meets in such horoscope; Kaal Sarp Yog is formed in such horoscope. On the other hand, if Rahu and Ketu are both benefic or one of them is benefic in a horoscope; Kaal Sarp Yog doesn’t form in such horoscope.

Each and every planet among navagraha keeps changing its functional nature by percentage; with every passing minute. As a result, an extremely benefic planet can turn into an average benefic planet within a matter of an hour; and it can turn into a malefic planet within a couple of hours. Once a planet becomes malefic, the same process starts. It means such planet may reach its peak from being an average malefic to being extremely malefic, it may then decline in intensity and finally, it may start giving benefic results within a few hours.

This process keeps repeating itself in a cycle, for each and every planet. That is what makes so many different types of planetary arrangements possible in various horoscopes. The continuously changing natures and intensities of all planets among navagraha are responsible for producing billions of different people in the world; by means of billions of different arrangements of planetary energies as well as other energies.

Hence even within a period of specific six months; Kaal Sarp Yog may not form in the horoscope of every native born during such period. This is because the most important criterion for the formation of every malefic yoga including Kaal Sarp Yog may keep changing with every passing minute and hour. It means that for all people born on a particular day when all seven planets among navagraha are enclosed between Rahu and Ketu; some of them may have Kaal Sarp Yog whereas some others may not have; depending on the benefic or malefic nature of Rahu and Ketu in their horoscopes. Let’s look at the refined definition of Kaal Sarp Yog.

If in a horoscope, all seven planets are placed within the axis of Rahu and Ketu; Kaal Sarp Yog is formed in such horoscope; provided both Rahu and Ketu are functionally malefic in the horoscope. It means that even if one of them is benefic in such horoscope, Kaal Sarp Yog may not form in such horoscope. In some cases; when any one among Moon, Sun, Venus or Mercury is placed outside Rahu-Ketu axis; Kaal Sarp Yog may still form in the horoscope.

Formation and Functioning of Kaal Sarp Dosh

Once the formation of Kaal Sarp Yog is confirmed in a horoscope, the next thing to do is check the field of impact of this defect. It means we need to find the spheres of life where it can cause problems. For this purpose, the house of placement of Kaal Sarp Yog is the primary criterion. Based on this criterion; twelve different types of Kaal Sarp Yogas exist. For example, if Kaal Sarp Yog is formed when Rahu is placed in the first house and Ketu is placed in the seventh house of a horoscope; it is called Anant Kaal Sarp Yog.

This type of Kaal Sarp Yog may primarily cause problems related to the significances of the first and seventh house; which are the houses of placements of Rahu and Ketu in this horoscope, respectively. It means the health, lifespan, overall wellbeing, personality, profession and marriage of the native may be the primary targets of this type of Kaal Sarp Yog.

The next factor to check is the strength of this defect. The strength of Kaal Sarp Yog is calculated through the placements of Rahu and Ketu in various signs, nakshatras and navamshas; as well as through the influences of other benefic and malefic planets on Rahu and Ketu. The overall theme of horoscope and running times (Mahadashas) also affect the strength of Kaal Sarp Yog.

Starting with signs, placements of Rahu and Ketu in various signs may change the strength of Kaal Sarp Yog. An Aries-Libra (Rahu in Aries and Ketu in Libra) type of Kaal Sarp Yog may possess significant strength though it may not be strong or very strong in most cases. Taurus-Scorpio Kaal Sarp Yog may be strong or very strong; since Rahu is exalted in Taurus and Ketu is exalted in Scorpio. On the other hand, Scorpio-Taurus Kaal Sarp Yog may be weak in most cases; since Rahu is debilitated in Scorpio and Ketu is debilitated in Taurus. Likewise, the strength of this defect may be different for other combinations, depending on the strength of Rahu and Ketu in their respective signs.

Let’s look at the influences of benefic and malefic planets as well as the impact of running times and the overall theme of horoscope on Kaal Sarp Yog. Let’s take an example to understand this concept in a better manner.

Suppose malefic Rahu is placed in the first house of a horoscope in Aries, malefic Ketu is placed in the seventh house in Libra and all other planet are placed in houses ranging from the seventh to the first house. Suppose benefic Venus is placed in the seventh house in Libra along with malefic Ketu, benefic Moon is placed in the first house in Aries with malefic Rahu; and benefic Sun is placed in the ninth house in Sagittarius.

Venus is strong in Libra and it rules the seventh house. Hence it may reduce problems related to marriage of the native, to a significant extent. The placement of Moon in the first house may help with health, lifespan and profession of the native. Benefic and strong Sun in the ninth house may boost the luck factor and it may also provide more strength to the horoscope. As a result, the native may witness significant relief in problems caused by Kaal Sarp Yog.

Suppose exalted Mars is placed in the tenth house in Capricorn, Jupiter is placed in the eleventh house in Aquarius along with Saturn; and Mercury is placed in the eighth house in Scorpio. The overall horoscope becomes more balanced in this case. Mars is partly benefic and partly malefic in this horoscope though the benefic part is much higher than the malefic part. Hence exalted Mars in the tenth house may significantly reduce the problems related to profession of the native.

The concept of a planet being partly benefic and partly malefic in a horoscope has been explained in the chapter ‘Gemstones for House Lords’ of the book ‘Gemstones: Magic or Science?’.

Mars rules the first as well as the eighth house and both these houses represent lifespan among other things. Since Mars is very strong due to exaltation; the native may not witness much reduction in his lifespan due to Kaal Sarp Yog. Hence the influence of benefic Moon and Venus on Rahu and Ketu as well as the influence of the overall theme of horoscope may reduce the malefic effects of Kaal Sarp Yog a lot.

Let’s look at the running times called Mahadashas or planetary periods in general. Running times are most important when it comes to check; when may the native suffer the most due to Kaal Sarp Yog. Any type of good or bad yoga becomes duly effective, if one of the planets actively involved in its formation rules the running time. Therefore, the native may witness the strongest malefic effects of Kaal Sarp Yog when he is hit by the Mahadasha of Rahu or Ketu. This simple looking fact may significantly change the quantum of problems faced by a native under strong influence of Kaal Sarp Yog.

Mahadashas are decided on the basis of birth nakshatra which is the nakshatra of placement of Moon in the birth chart. If a native is born with Moon in Ashwini nakshatra, the Mahadasha of Ketu is in effect since Ketu rules Ashwini. Likewise, if a native is born with Moon in Bharani, he’s born under Venus Mahadasha since Bharani is ruled by Venus.

Planetary periods repeat in fixed cyclic pattern and one cycle takes 120 years to complete. Ketu Mahadasha lasts for 7 years, followed by 20 year Venus Mahadasha, followed by 6 year Sun Mahadasha, 10 year Moon Mahadasha, 7 year Mars Mahadasha, 18 year Rahu Mahadasha, 16 year Jupiter Mahadasha, 19 year Saturn Mahadasha and 17 year Mercury Mahadasha. This gives us 120 years. At the end of Mercury Mahadasha; Ketu Mahadasha begins again.

Suppose within the sign of Aries, Moon is placed in the first quarter of Ashwini nakshatra. It means the native is born under Ketu period; since Ashwini is ruled by Ketu. As Moon is placed in the first quarter of this nakshatra, about 6 years of this period may still be left. Ketu period is followed by 20 year Venus period, 6 year Sun period, 10 year Moon period, 7 years Mars period and then by 18 year Rahu period.

It means that in this case, Ketu period strikes this native right from the time of birth and Rahu period may reach this native around his age of 49 years. Ketu is primarily causing problems related to marriage of the native. Since marriage is not an issue during the first 6 years of life; Kaal Sarp Yog may not trouble the native a lot during this period. Between the age of 6 and 49, the native may be under the effect of periods of planets which are significantly benefic or highly benefic for him.

Hence he may witness very good results related to profession, health and overall wellbeing till his age of 49 years; whereas he may witness good or satisfactory results related to marriage; depending on the ‘finer factors’. As the Mahadasha of Rahu begins; Kaal Sarp Yog may gain strength and the native may start facing problems related to profession and health; among other problems. The term ‘finer factors’ means the placements of various planets in a various nakshatras and navamshas.

Let’s look at another variation. Suppose within the sign of Aries, Moon is placed in the first quarter of Krittika nakshatra in Sagittarius navamsha; and the rest of the horoscope remains the same. In this case, the native is born under Sun period with about 5 years left. Rahu period may rule the timeline between native’s age of 22 and 40. Hence Kaal Sarp Yog may gain extra strength during these years. Since these are prime years for profession, marriage and many other spheres; the native may suffer much more due to Kaal Sarp Yog in this case. This gives an idea as to how important the running times and finer factors are. Just the placement of Moon has been changed within the same sign and the overall results may change a lot.

Let’s look at the entire equation from the opposite angle and see what may happen when Rahu and Ketu are joined by malefic planets; and the overall theme of horoscope is also not supportive. Suppose malefic Rahu is placed in the first house of a horoscope in Aries, malefic Ketu is placed in the seventh house in Libra and all other planets are placed in houses ranging from the seventh to the first house.

Suppose Mars is placed in the seventh house of this horoscope in Libra along with Ketu. Mars is partly malefic in the horoscope, it is not strong in Libra and it is afflicted by Malefic Ketu. Hence the malefic part of Mars may increase in this case and it may become significantly malefic. The concept of a benefic planet turning into a malefic planet due to strong influence of malefic planets has been explained in the revised edition (2020) of the book ‘Pitra Dosh – Ancestors are Calling’.

As Mars becomes significantly malefic; it forms Manglik Dosh in the seventh house of this horoscope. As a result; the problems related to the marriage of the native may increase in number as well as in quantum. Hence the native may get married late or very late or he may face more than one broken marriage; depending on the overall horoscope. Since malefic Ketu afflict Mars which rules the first and eighth house; the problems related to health and lifespan may also increase in number and quantum.

Suppose malefic retrograde Mercury is placed in the first house in Aries, in Virgo navamsha of Bharani nakshatra; along with malefic Rahu. Malefic Mercury may add more negativity to the first house as well as to the overall horoscope. As a result; the number as well as quantum of problems related to health, lifespan and profession of the native may increase. Suppose Jupiter is also placed in the first house and Guru Chandal Yoga is formed.

In general, Jupiter is partly benefic and partly malefic in horoscopes with Aries ascendant; though the benefic part may be much higher than the malefic part. However in this case; Jupiter is afflicted by malefic Rahu and Mercury. Hence it may turn significantly or highly malefic. Due to the combined malefic influence of these planets; Kaal Sarp Yog may cause much more damage to many spheres of native’s life.

Suppose a combination of Sun and exalted Venus is placed in the twelfth house in Pisces and Saturn is placed in the eleventh house in Aquarius, in Aries navamsha of Poorvabhadrapada nakshatra. Sun is not strong in Pisces and the twelfth house is a difficult to handle house. Saturn is not comfortable in Aries navamsha of Poorvabhadrapada. As the combined result of all these factors; the overall horoscope may become highly malefic and the native may face very serious problems related to health, lifespan, profession and marriage; among other things.

The lifespan of the native may be seriously affected in this case, since Mars as well as the first house is troubled. Hence the native may die any time before his age or 45 years; depending on the finer factors as well as on the placement of Moon, since it controls planetary periods.

Malefic effects of Kaal Sarp Yog can be reduced with the help of remedies. The application of gemstones and Poojas in particular may prove useful in reducing the strength and/or malefic effects of Kaal Sarp Yog. Gemstones may be more useful in counteracting the malefic effects produced by Kaal Sarp Yog, and they may not be able to directly reduce the strength of this defect in many cases. Poojas may directly reduce the strength of this defect in most cases. As that happens; malefic effects produced by Kaal Sarp Yog may also reduce.

Vasuki Kaal Sarp Yog

If in a horoscope, Rahu is placed in the third house, Ketu is placed in the ninth house and all other planets are placed within the axis of Rahu and Ketu, Vasuki Kaal Sarp Yog is formed in that horoscope. To simplify, if all other planets are placed from house number three to nine or from house number nine to three in such horoscope, Vasuki Kaal Sarp Yog is formed in the horoscope. In some cases; when any one among Moon, Sun, Venus or Mercury is placed outside Rahu-Ketu axis; Kaal Sarp Yog may still form in the horoscope.

Vasuki Kaal Sarp Yog may trouble the native with problems related to father, siblings, profession, religious growth, spiritual growth, luck factor, higher education and a number of other things.

Whenever Vasuki Kaal Sarp Yog is formed in a horoscope, Pitra Dosh is also formed. This is because malefic Ketu afflicts the ninth house and hence it forms Pitra Dosh. Vasuki Kaal Sarp Yog may adversely affect the luck factor. Since luck factor is important for each and every sphere of life; Vasuki Kaal Sarp Yog may create problems; almost in every sphere of native’s life, though the spheres represented by the third and the ninth house may be hit on primary basis.

Vasuki Kaal Sarp Yog may trouble the native with problems related to or caused by his father, brothers and sisters. The native may have a sibling or siblings who may be jealous of him and they may try to trouble him in one way or the other, from time to time. Looking at another probability, the native may have to face financial losses and/or bad reputation due to the acts of his siblings. In some cases, the equation may reverse and the natives may bring bad reputation to their fathers and other family members. In such cases, the natives may trouble their siblings and fathers on account of various problems; almost throughout their lives.

Vasuki Kaal Sarp Yog may create a number of problems related to professional sphere. Let’s look at some of them. The native may engage in illegal professions or he may engage in professions which may be considered immoral by society. Moving on, the native may choose life of crime and he may engage in various types of crimes; depending on his overall horoscope. The native may not have very good success rate in his profession and he may get caught by law enforcing agencies, a number of times; unless this factors is corrected by other planets in his horoscope. This is because Vasuki Kaal Sarp Yog hits the luck factor; and luck is what one needs the most when engaging in crimes.

Hence the native may often fall short of luck and he may get caught. Such native may go to prison, many times in his life. In an extreme case of this type; the native may serve prison sentences of more than 5 years; more than once in his life or he may serve prison sentence of more than 14 years in one go.

Looking at some other problems, the native may witness delays, losses and setbacks through his profession. The native may suffer because of bad equation with his colleagues or teammates. Some of them may conspire against the native and he may face significant or serious problems because of them; from time to time. The native may have to quit his job or he may be terminated from the job, many times in his life; and the bad equation between him and his colleagues may play important role.

Vasuki Kaal Sarp Yog may also trouble the native with problems related to his father. The native may lose his father early in life due to various reasons. For example, native’s parents may get divorced during his childhood and native’s mother may get his custody. Considering another probability, native’s father may leave the family without information; in search of spiritual advancement. Looking at one more probability, native’s father may serve prison sentence of more than 10 years during native’s childhood. Hence the native may not have the chance to be with his father. In an extreme case when Vasuki Kaal Sarp Yog is supported by other malefic planets; native’s father may die during his childhood.

In cases where this defect is not strong, the intensity of such problems may reduce. Hence the native may not be able to spend much time with his father; as his father may be engaged in a profession which may demand him to stay away from his family; like a defence personnel posted at a distant location.

Once the formation of Vasuki Kaal Sarp Yog is confirmed in a horoscope, the next factor to check is the strength of this defect. The strength of Kaal Sarp Yog is calculated through the placements of Rahu and Ketu in various signs, nakshatras and navamshas; as well as through the influences of other benefic and malefic planets on Rahu and Ketu. The overall theme of horoscope and running times (Mahadashas) also affect the strength of Vasuki Kaal Sarp Yog.

Let’s start with signs. Suppose malefic Rahu in the third house in Libra and malefic Ketu in the ninth house in Aries form Vasuki Kaal Sarp Yog in a horoscope. Rahu is strong in Libra and Ketu is strong in Aries. Hence such Vasuki Kaal Sarp Yog may be strong or very strong; depending on placements of Rahu and Ketu in various nakshatras and navamshas, within their respective signs.

Such Vasuki Kaal Sarp Yog may cause various types of problems related to profession. The native may have to change his job or even his field of profession, a number of times in his life. At times, the native may quit his job as he may have bad equation with his colleagues or seniors whereas at other times, his employers may terminate his job due to various reasons. Such native may often not care for general protocols to be followed in a particular job and this factor may have major contribution in making the native lose jobs. Apart from that; the native may often suffer due to bad luck.

If the native engages in business, he may often make hasty decisions, some of which may result in financial losses, setbacks, failures and loss of reputation. Such Vasuki Kaal Sarp Yog may provoke the native to engage in professions which may not be suitable for him. The native may get into such professions and he may realize later, that such professions are not suitable for him. Hence he may quit them. Taking an example, the native may invest in a cellphone selling showroom but he may get out of this profession after a year or so; as he may not feel comfortable with it and he may also face losses through it.

Malefic impact of such Vasuki Kaal Sarp Yog may also render criminal tendencies to the native. Hence he may engage in various types of crimes, depending on his overall horoscope. When supported by overall horoscope, such defect may turn the native into a drug trafficker, member of a mafia organization, woman trafficker or some other type of criminal; depending on his overall horoscope. In an extreme case of this type; the native may get convicted for some crimes committed by him and he may serve prison sentence of more than 10 years.

Moving on, let’s look at the influences of benefic and malefic planets as well as the impact of running times and the overall theme of horoscope on such Kaal Sarp Yog. Let’s take an example to understand this concept in a better manner.

Suppose malefic Rahu in the third house in Libra and malefic Ketu in the ninth house in Aries form Vasuki Kaal Sarp Yog in a horoscope. Suppose a benefic combination of exalted Sun (in Taurus navamsha of Ashwini) and Mercury (in Virgo navamsha of Bharani) is placed in the ninth house in Aries along with malefic Ketu; and benefic Mars is placed in the third house in Libra, in Capricorn navamsha of Swati nakshatra.

Sun is exalted in Aries and it forms Budhaditya Yoga in combination with Mercury; though Grahan Yoga is also formed due to affliction from Ketu to Sun. However due to combined benefic influence of Sun and Mercury; the strength of Budhaditya Yoga may be much higher than that of Grahan Yoga. Mars does well in Libra and it is strong in Capricorn navamsha. Mars casts direct aspect on Ketu whereas Sun and Mercury cast direct aspect on Rahu. As a result, both Rahu and Ketu may turn partly benefic and partly malefic; and strength of Vasuki Kaal Sarp Yog may reduce a lot.

Since benefic exalted Sun being the lord of the first house as well as being the general signifier of ancestors is placed in the ninth house and it is supported by benefic Mercury; Pitra Dosh formed by Ketu may lose most of its strength. Benefic Mercury rules the second house which represents family. Hence it may also help a lot in reducing the strength of Pitra Dosh. Suppose benefic Venus is placed in the tenth house in Taurus, in Taurus navamsha of Rohini nakshatra; Moon is placed in the eleventh house in Gemini, in Gemini navamsha of Punarvasu nakshatra, Saturn is placed in the second house in Virgo and exalted Jupiter is placed in the twelfth house in Cancer in Pushya nakshatra.

The overall horoscope becomes stronger and more balanced in this case. As a result, the native may not face serious or very serious problems in any sphere of his life; affected by such Vasuki Kaal Sarp Yog. On the contrary, he may witness good results related to most such spheres; and the sphere of profession may benefit the most.

Looking at the running times, Moon is placed in Gemini navamsha of Punarvasu. Hence the native is born under Jupiter Mahadasha with about 5 years left. Jupiter Mahadasha is followed by 19 year Saturn Mahadasha, 17 year Mercury Mahadasha, 7 year Ketu Mahadasha, 20 year Venus Mahadasha and 6 year Sun Mahadasha. Jupiter is partly benefic and partly malefic in the horoscope. Saturn is malefic in the horoscope. Ketu is partly benefic and partly malefic.

Hence the native may not witness good professional results as well as those related to many other spheres; till the end of Saturn Mahadasha which means till the age of 24 years. After that, the Mahadashas may be ruled by Mercury, Ketu, Venus and Sun for 50 years which means till native’s age of 74 years. Suppose malefic Rahu in the third house in Libra and malefic Ketu in the ninth house in Aries form Vasuki Kaal Sarp Yog in a horoscope. Suppose malefic Moon and malefic exalted Saturn are placed in the third house along with malefic Rahu; and Jupiter is placed in the ninth house in Aries; along with malefic Ketu. In general, Jupiter is partly benefic and partly malefic for horoscopes with Leo ascendant.

Malefic exalted Saturn and Moon may add a lot more negativity to the third house as well as to Rahu. Saturn and Moon may also transfer significant amount of negativity to Ketu and Jupiter in the ninth house. As a result; Saturn, Moon, Rahu and Ketu may turn highly malefic whereas Jupiter may turn significantly malefic in the horoscope. Hence such malefic combination may trouble the native with a number of problems related to many spheres of his life.

Saturn rules the sixth house which deals with diseases among other things. Moon represents emotional wellbeing and mental health among other things. Rahu is known for causing psychological disorders when it is malefic. As the combined result of these factors; the native may suffer from various types of psychological problems which may be serious or very serious; depending on the rest of his horoscope as well as on the finer factors.

Saturn rules the seventh house in this case and it is seriously afflicted. Hence such malefic combination may trouble the marriage of the native. In case the native is male; the problems may be relatively less in quantum, unless Venus is also damaged in the horoscope.

The application of gemstones and Poojas in particular may prove useful in reducing the strength and/or malefic effects of Kaal Sarp Yog. Gemstones may be more useful in counteracting the malefic effects produced by Vasuki Kaal Sarp Yog, and they may not be able to directly reduce the strength of this defect in many cases. Poojas may directly reduce the strength of this defect in most cases. As that happens; malefic effects produced by Kaal Sarp Yog may also reduce.

Padam Kaal Sarp Yog

If in a horoscope, Rahu is placed in the fifth house, Ketu is placed in the eleventh house and all other planets are placed within the axis of Rahu and Ketu, Padam Kaal Sarp Yog is formed in that horoscope. To simplify, if all other planets are placed from house number five to eleven or from house number eleven to five in such horoscope, Padam Kaal Sarp Yog is formed in the horoscope. In some cases; when any one among Moon, Sun, Venus or Mercury is placed outside Rahu-Ketu axis; Kaal Sarp Yog may still form in the horoscope.

Padam Kaal Sarp Yog may trouble the native with problems related to love life, lover, birth of children, wellbeing of children, relationship with children, spiritual growth, creativity, profession, financial losses, friends, associates, stock markets and many other types of problems; depending on his overall horoscope.

Padam Kaal Sarp Yog may trouble a native under its influence with a number of problems related to children. Let’s look at some of them. The native may witness delay in childbirth and such delay may prolong if this defect is supported by other malefic planets. This aspect may prove much more troublesome if the native is female. Such native may have medical problems related to her reproductive system. Hence she may face complications when she tries to conceive and deliver. The native may suffer from miscarriages, more than once. Let’s start with signs. Suppose malefic Rahu in the fifth house in Gemini and malefic Ketu in the eleventh house in Sagittarius form Padam Kaal Sarp Yog in a horoscope. Rahu is strong in Gemini and Ketu is strong in Sagittarius. Hence such Kaal Sarp Yog may be strong in most cases, it may be very strong in some cases and it may possess significant strength in some cases.

Such Padam Kaal Sarp Yog may have adverse effect on financial situation as well as on the profession of the native. Hence the native may not be able to get well-paying jobs, despite being qualified for them. Depending on the overall horoscope, the native may not be qualified for such jobs and he may have low earnings due to lack of education as well as skills. The native may lose his job or he may witness discontinuation of profession, many times in his life. In many cases, the native may lose jobs because of being impulsive and doing things in hurry, without giving them due consideration or without doing them in planned manner.

Such Padam Kaal Sarp Yog may also make the native lose money through stock markets, bets, gambling and other likewise practices. The native may lose much more than he gains, whenever he engages in such practices. Suppose benefic Venus is placed in the fifth house in Gemini in Punarvasu in Taurus navamsha, benefic exalted Sun is placed in the third house in Aries in Ashwini, Mercury is placed in the fourth house in Taurus in Rohini, Saturn is placed in the second house in Pisces and Moon is placed in the twelfth house in Capricorn. The overall horoscope becomes much more balanced in this case.

Jupiter and Mars are strong in Sagittarius and collectively; they are much stronger than Ketu in this sign. Hence the overall combination in the eleventh house may turn benefic and Ketu may also show benefic results; along with malefic results. Venus and Rahu are both strong in Gemini. However, Venus has advantage through the positive energy it receives from the combination in the eleventh house. The remaining planets are also placed well in the horoscope.

As the combined result of all these factors; Padam Kaal Sarp Yog may lose most of its strength and it may not cause serious damage to any sphere hit by it; though it may still cause mild damage to some spheres and significant damage to some spheres. The sphere of profession may benefit the most due to strong placements of Jupiter, Mars and Sun. The sphere of marriage may do well in case the native is male. In case the native is female, this sphere may face mild or significant but not serious problems.

Looking at the running times; suppose within the sign of Capricorn; Moon is placed in Leo navamsha of Dhanishtha. It means the native is born under Mars Mahadasha with about 6 years left. This Mahadasha is followed by 18 year Rahu Mahadasha, 16 year Jupiter Mahadasha, 19 year Saturn Mahadasha and then by 17 year Mercury Mahadasha. Hence these five planets may rule the timelines from the time of birth of the native, till his age of 76 years. All the planets engaged in this combination are significantly or highly benefic.

As a result, the native may not face serious problems during any of these Mahadashas. Rahu Mahadasha may produce good as well as bad results; though the good results may be more in number and quantum. Jupiter Mahadasha may prove the best one and it may bless the native with very good results related to most spheres of his life; between his age of 24 and 40. Saturn Mahadasha may produce good results though it may also cause some problems. Mercury Mahadasha may produce good results related to some spheres and very good results related to some other spheres; though it may also cause some problems. Let’s change the entire equation and see what may happen when malefic Rahu and Ketu are joined by other malefic planets. Suppose malefic Rahu in the fifth house in Gemini and malefic Ketu in the eleventh house in Sagittarius form Padam Kaal Sarp Yog in a horoscope. Suppose malefic Moon as well as Mercury is placed in the fifth house in Gemini along with Rahu; and Saturn is placed in the eleventh house in Sagittarius in Moola. Suppose Sun is placed in the sixth house in Cancer along with debilitated Mars; and Venus is placed in the seventh house in Leo.

Moon, Rahu and Ketu are highly malefic. Sun and Mars are weak in the Cancer and the sixth house is a troublesome house. Saturn is not comfortable in Sagittarius and Moola is a destructive nakshatra. In addition to these factors, Saturn receives a lot of negativity from strong Ketu as well as from the malefic combination in the fifth house. Hence Saturn may turn significantly or highly malefic in the horoscope; depending on the finer factors as well as on the placement of Jupiter in the horoscope.

It means that among these 8 planets; only Venus is duly benefic though it is not much comfortable in Leo. If benefic Jupiter is placed in the tenth house of this horoscope in Scorpio; the horoscope may become better and the benefic part of Saturn may increase. However, if Jupiter is placed in the fifth or eighth house; the problems may aggravate and Saturn may turn even more malefic. Suppose Jupiter is placed in the eighth house in Virgo.

In this case, such Padam Kaal Sarp Yog supported by all other malefic or troubled planets may cause serious damage to all spheres hit by it. Since Saturn being the lord of the first house and Mercury being the lord of the eighth house are seriously afflicted; the biggest threat may be posed to native’s lifespan. Hence the native may suffer from various types of health issues and some of them may be terminal. Depending on the finer factors as well as on the running times; the native may die any time before the age of 45 years.

Suppose within the sign of Gemini, Moon is placed in Sagittarius navamsha of Ardra nakshatra. It means the native is born during Rahu Mahadasha with about 16 years left. Rahu Mahadasha is followed by 16 year Jupiter Mahadasha and then by 19 year Saturn Mahadasha. Saturn’s Mahadasha may rules the timeline between native’s age of 32 and 51; and the native may not survive this period. In this case, the native may die because of heart attack or some type of cancer.

Looking at another variation; suppose Moon is placed in Gemini navamsha of Punarvasu nakshatra. It means the native is born under Jupiter Mahadasha, with about 6 year left. This Mahadasha is followed by 19 year Saturn Mahadasha and then by 17 year Mercury Mahadasha. Hence the Mahadashas of Saturn and Mercury may rule the timelines between native’s age of 6 and 42. Saturn represents lifespan through the first house; and it is seriously afflicted. Mercury represents lifespan through the eighth house and it too is seriously afflicted. Hence the native may die any time before his age of 42; during Saturn or Mercury Mahadasha; depending on the finer factors.

Such Padam Kaal Sarp Yog supported by other malefic planets may also create serious problems related to profession, finances, love life, children, marriage, spiritual growth, mental health and a number of other spheres.

Malefic effects of Padam Kaal Sarp Yog can be reduced with the help of remedies. Mahapadam Kaal Sarp Yog

If in a horoscope, Rahu is placed in the sixth house, Ketu is placed in the twelfth house and all other planets are placed within the axis of Rahu and Ketu, Mahapadam Kaal Sarp Yog is formed in that horoscope. To simplify, if all other planets are placed from house number six to twelve or from house number twelve to six in such horoscope, Mahapadam Kaal Sarp Yog is formed in the horoscope. In some cases; when any one among Moon, Sun, Venus or Mercury is placed outside Rahu-Ketu axis; Kaal Sarp Yog may still form in the horoscope.

Mahapadam Kaal Sarp Yog may trouble the native with problems related to disputes, disagreements, court cases, finances, debts, enemies, diseases, profession, marriage, spiritual growth, black magic, delays, losses, unfortunate events, addictions, vices and a number of other problems.

Since the sixth house deals with disputes, disagreements and court cases among other things; and the twelfth house deals with losses, perversions and fantasies among other things; Mahapadam Kaal Sarp Yog may affect the marriage of a native under its influence. Marriage is one of the biggest agreements between two people and the elements like disputes, disagreements, perversions and fantasies may create a number of problems in this relationship. Some natives suffering from Mahapadam Kaal Sarp Yog may face delay in their marriages whereas majority of them may witness problems after marriage. It means this defect may not delay marriage in majority of cases and it may rather take pleasure in damaging the marriage.

In an extreme case when this defect is strong and supported by other malefic planets; it may cause death of native due to liver failure, various types of cancers, fatal bacterial or viral infections; or some other fatal disease or infection.

Mahapadam Kaal Sarp Yog may create a wide variety of problems related to native’s profession. This defect may trouble the professional sphere of native through disputes, disagreements, immoral or illegal activities, enemies, financial losses and a number of other things. In an extreme case when such Mahapadam Kaal Sarp Yog is strong and supported by other malefic planets; the native may serve prison sentence of more than 10 years or death penalty may be awarded to him.

Such Mahapadam Kaal Sarp Yog may trouble the native with problems related to various types of diseases. The native may develop affinity for smoking, alcohol and/or drugs and he may consume them on regular basis. Prolonged use of such substances may cause various types of health problems. The native may lose money and reputation due to such habits; along with losing health. The health problems may reduce his lifespan and they may prove difficult to handle with time. The native may witness mild, significant or serious reduction in lifespan due to consumption of such substances; depending on his overall horoscope. In an extreme case of this type; the native may die anytime between the age of 20 and 40 due to drug overdose or due to serious health issues created by drug abuse; depending on his overall horoscope.

This type of Mahapadam Kaal Sarp Yog may also create problems related to marriage. The native may have differences of opinion with his wife and with time, these differences may turn into serious conflicts which may ultimately break his marriage. In case this defect is strong, it can break one or two marriages of the native on its own. If this defect is strong and supported by other malefic planets; it may break two, three or more marriages.

This type of Mahapadam Kaal Sarp Yog may also make the native engage in various types of criminal and/or immoral activities. The native may earn money through prostitution if she’s female whereas the native may spend a lot of money towards sexual pleasures through the company of sex workers, if he’s male. In case such Mahapadam Kaal Sarp Yog is strong and supported by other malefic planets; the native may become a criminal and he may deal in drugs, prostitution, woman trafficking and/or financial crimes.

Moving on, let’s look at the influences of benefic and malefic planets as well as the impact of running times and the overall theme of horoscope on such Mahapadam Kaal Sarp Yog. Let’s take an example to understand this concept in a better manner.

Suppose malefic Rahu in the sixth house in Cancer and malefic Ketu in the twelfth house in Capricorn form Mahapadam Kaal Sarp Yog in a horoscope. This is a special case and no benefic planet may be able to reduce the strength of this defect by virtue of conjunction with Rahu or Ketu; without causing problems. This is because the sixth and twelfth house feature hostile environment. Hence any planet placed in one of these houses along with malefic Rahu or Ketu may come under the combined attack of that house as well as Rahu or Ketu.

Therefore, different method is required to balance this defect. In this case, benefic planets should protect the spheres affected by such Mahapadam Kaal Sarp Yog. For example, this defect may cause problems related to health and some of these problems may come through addictions.

Hence Saturn being the lord of the ascendant should be strong and clean so that the native may be able to have good health. Jupiter and Saturn should be healthy so that the native may stay away from addictions. Looking at marriage; Sun and Venus (for male) or Jupiter (for female) should be healthy so that the native may not face many problems in marriage. Looking at profession and finances; Saturn, Jupiter and Mars should be strong so that these spheres may also not face many problems.

Taking an example, suppose a benefic combination of Saturn (in Rohini), Venus and Mars is placed in the fourth house of this horoscope in Taurus, a benefic combination of exalted Sun and Mercury is placed in the third house in Aries, benefic Jupiter is placed in the second house in Pisces and malefic Moon is placed in the fifth house in Gemini in Punarvasu nakshatra. The overall horoscope becomes strong and benefic in this case.

All these planets may protect the native from problems related to health, profession, finances, addictions, marriage and other problems posed by such Mahapadam Kaal Sarp Yog. The native may do very well in the sphere of profession as well as finances and he may do well in case of health, marriage and other spheres hit by such Mahapadam Kaal Sarp Yog.

Looking at the running times; suppose Moon is placed in Gemini navamsha of Punarvasu. It means the native is born under Jupiter Mahadasha, with about 6 years left. This Mahadasha is followed by 19 year Saturn Mahadasha, 17 year Mercury Mahadasha, 7 year Ketu Mahadasha, 20 year Venus Mahadasha and 6 year Sun Mahadasha. It means the Sun Mahadasha may end at native’s age of 75 years.

The native may not witness 18 year Rahu Mahadasha throughout his life since it is supposed to hit him at the age of 92 years in this case. The native may witness very good results during Jupiter Mahadasha, good results mixed with some bad results during Saturn Mahadasha as well as Mercury Mahadasha; difficult times during Ketu Mahadasha and very good results during Venus and Sun Mahadasha. The native may experience overall best results between his age of 49 and 75 years; during Venus and Sun Mahadashas.

Let’s change the entire equation and see what may happen when Rahu and Ketu are joined by malefic planets. Suppose malefic Rahu in the sixth house in Cancer and malefic Ketu in the twelfth house in Capricorn form Mahapadam Kaal Sarp Yog in a horoscope. Suppose Moon, Mercury and Sun are placed in the sixth house with Rahu; and debilitated Jupiter is placed in the twelfth house with Ketu.

Moon is malefic and its placement in the sixth house may make it even more malefic. Mercury is partly malefic but it is weak in Cancer. Hence the strong collective influence of Moon and Rahu may turn it highly malefic in this case. Sun is weak in Cancer, it is troubled by the sixth house and it is afflicted by three malefic planets. Hence Sun may turn significantly malefic in the horoscope. Jupiter is debilitated and the twelfth house presents hostile environment. Jupiter is afflicted by Ketu and it receives a lot of negative energy from the malefic combination in the sixth house. As a result, it may also turn significantly or highly malefic in the horoscope. It means that each one among the six planets involved in this combination may be significantly or highly malefic.

The concept of benefic planets turning malefic due to strong influences of malefic planets; and malefic planets turning benefic due to strong influences of benefic planets has been explained in the revised edition of the book ‘Pitra Dosh – Ancestors are Calling’.

Since 6 out of 9 planets are malefic as well as troubled due to their placements as well as due to afflictions from other planets; and 7 out of 12 houses are afflicted or troubled; the horoscope may turn highly malefic. Unless strong benefic planets make some repairs in this horoscope, it is almost doomed. Hence the native may witness serious or very serious problems related to health, lifespan, profession, marriage, finances, children, mother, father and a number of other spheres.

In case Venus, Mars and Saturn are also troubled in the horoscope; the native may face even more serious problems related to most spheres of his life. Taking an example, suppose debilitated Venus is placed in the eighth house in Virgo and a combination of Mars and retrograde Saturn is placed in the seventh house in Leo in Magha in Aries navamsha.

Venus is very weak and it is placed in a troublesome house. Saturn is weak in Leo and its placement in Aries navamsha of Magha may further aggravate the situation. On account of being retrograde, it may become more sensitive in this case, which means it may become more vulnerable. The placement of Mars may not help Saturn in this case and on the contrary, it may create more problems for Saturn; by adding extra energy when Saturn may not be able to deal with such excess of energy. Hence the horoscope may collapse.

As a result, the native may witness serious or very serious problems related to almost each and every sphere of his life. The number, type and quantum of problems faced by the native in this case is beyond the scope of description. If in a horoscope, Rahu is placed in the twelfth house, Ketu is placed in the sixth house and all other planets are placed within the axis of Rahu and Ketu, Sheshnag Kaal Sarp Yog is formed in that horoscope. To simplify, if all other planets are placed from house number six to twelve or from house number twelve to six in such horoscope, Sheshnag Kaal Sarp Yog is formed in the horoscope. In some cases; when any one among Moon, Sun, Venus or Mercury is placed outside Rahu-Ketu axis; Kaal Sarp Yog may still form in the horoscope.

Sheshnag Kaal Sarp Yog may trouble the native with problems related to disputes, disagreements, court cases, finances, debts, enemies, diseases, profession, marriage, spiritual growth, black magic, delays, losses, unfortunate events, addictions, vices and a number of other problems.

Sheshnag Kaal Sarp Yog may create problems related to profession. Hence natives under its influence may go through many types of troubles related to their professions. Hence the native may consume alcohol, he may smoke and/or he may use various types of harmful drugs on regular basis. This is because the sixth and twelfth house feature hostile environment. Apart from that, Rahu is strong in Gemini and Ketu is strong in Sagittarius. Hence any planet placed in one of these houses along with malefic Rahu or Ketu may come under the combined attack of that house as well as Rahu or Ketu.

Hence different method is required to balance this defect. In this case, benefic planets should protect the spheres affected by such Sheshnag Kaal Sarp Yog. Taking an example, suppose benefic exalted Mars is placed in the seventh house of this horoscope in Capricorn. Suppose exalted Sun and Mercury are placed in the tenth house in Aries, Jupiter is placed in the eleventh house in Taurus, a combination of exalted Venus and Moon is placed in the ninth house in Pisces and Saturn is placed in the eighth house in Aquarius. Within the sign of Aries, suppose Sun is placed in Aries navamsha of Ashwini and Mercury is placed in Libra navamsha of Bharani. In this case, the overall horoscope may become strong and positive.

Sheshnag Kaal Sarp Yog may tend to create problems related to health, marriage, profession, finances and addictions among other things. Looking at health; Moon (lord of the first house) and the first house are strong. Sun and Mars represent immunity in general; and both of them are very strong. Hence the native may not witness many problems related to health. Looking at addictions; Sun, Mars and Saturn are strong; and Jupiter is doing well in the horoscope. Hence the native may not suffer losses through addictions through he may use alcohol on regular basis and he may also smoke. However, he may stay within the limits and the overall strong horoscope may protect him from serious health issues.

Looking at marriage; the seventh house is empowered by benefic exalted Mars; Venus is exalted as well as empowered by Moon. Jupiter is doing well and Saturn is strong though not well placed. Looking at the running times; suppose within the sign of Pisces, Moon is placed in Sagittarius navamsha of Revati nakshatra. It means the native is born under Mercury Mahadasha; with about 15 years left. Mercury Mahadasha is followed by 7 year Ketu Mahadasha, 20 year Venus Mahadasha, 6 year Sun Mahadasha, 10 year Moon Mahadasha and 7 year Mars Mahadasha. Suppose Jupiter and Mercury are placed in the twelfth house in Gemini, retrograde Saturn is placed in the sixth house in Sagittarius, Sun is placed in the first house in Cancer along with retrograde Mars in Pushya, debilitated Venus is placed in the third house in Virgo and Moon is placed in the fourth house in Libra.

Mars is debilitated and Sun is not strong in Cancer. Though they are placed in a comfortable house, they don’t have much strength. When it comes to Mars, it may receive more weakness due to combustion; and being retrograde may add more vulnerability to it in this case. Venus is debilitated and hence it may not provide much support to the horoscope. Moon is benefic and it does well in Libra. However, it may not provide much relief in this case due to the overall weak and highly malefic horoscope.

Looking at the twelfth house; Mercury and Rahu are malefic and both of them are strong in Gemini. Jupiter in general is partly benefic and partly malefic for horoscopes with Cancer ascendant. However in this case; it may receive serious afflictions from Mercury and Rahu; and Jupiter is no match for them in the sign of Gemini. The twelfth house is a difficult house and the combination in the sixth house sends a lot of negative energy to Jupiter. As the combined result of all these factors, Jupiter may turn malefic and the combination in the twelfth house may turn highly malefic.

Looking at the sixth house; Ketu is highly malefic and Saturn is significantly malefic. Ketu is much stronger than Saturn in Sagittarius. Saturn receives negative energy from Ketu as well as from the malefic combination in the twelfth house. It is placed in a difficult house, the overall horoscope is weak and being retrograde may make it more sensitive to negative energy in this case. Even if the native gets married, he/she may face a number of problems in marriage. Such marriage may be more like a compromise and less like a relationship formed on the basis of love, care, sharing and affection.

Looking at the fifth house; exalted Jupiter is much stronger than Ketu in Cancer. Apart from that; it receives a lot of positive energy from the combination in the eleventh house. As a result; Ketu may turn partly benefic and the combination in the fifth house may turn benefic though it may produce some malefic results. Hence Vishdhar Kaal Sarp Yog may lose most of its strength. The native may not face many problems related to profession, finances, reputation and children; though he may face some problems related to love life.

Mercury is benefic due to the houses it rules and due to its placement in a comfortable house as well as in a comfortable sign. Formation of Bhadra Yoga may add much more strength to the seventh house as well as to the overall horoscope. Sun, Venus and Saturn are all malefic and they may provide more strength to Kaal Sarp Yog. As a result, the combinations in the eleventh as well as fifth house may turn malefic and the overall combination of Sun, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu may become highly malefic. Hence Vishdhar Kaal Sarp Yog may cause 2 to 4 times more damage in this case.

Looking at the sphere of children; the native may face serious problems related to it and such problems may increase in quantum, if the native is female. Poojas may directly reduce the strength of this defect in most cases. As that happens; malefic effects produced by Kaal Sarp Yog may also reduce.
