Kaal Sarp Yog / Kaal Sarp Dosh
Rahu and Ketu are undoubtedly most mysterious, interesting and fear generating planets among Navagraha. From ancient times, astrologers have been associating all types of bad things, unfortunate events and global disasters with these two planets. What makes them even more interesting is that none of these planets have physical mass and they are shadow planets. Due to this attribute of theirs, some faiths of astrology find it difficult to believe that a planet which does not have any physical mass can affect the lives of billions of people on earth; and even more than that; such an entity can even be called a planet. This is why some faiths of astrology, especially the ones which did not originate from India; doubt the existence of Rahu and Ketu in the first place; let alone the choice of giving them a place among Navagraha; means the nine planets.
Indian Vedic astrologers and sages however, were of different opinion as they believed that for any entity to affect us on any level; a physical body is not a compulsory requirement. For instance, as long as our parents or loved ones are with us in their physical bodies; their impact on us is obvious and looks practical. However when they leave their physical bodies and are no longer with us, does their influence on us die altogether? They may not be physically with us now; but the essence of their personalities, their love, their teachings and their auras is what we always feel around us; as well as within us. This is why they can inspire or change our actions and thoughts, long after they’re gone in physical terms. Remember trying to do something not so good and then suddenly stopping as you hear your physically departed mother or father speaking to you from within you; and telling you not to do so. Isn’t this an impact as good as their physical impact, or even better than that.
Apart from having no physical mass, both Rahu and Ketu don’t rule any zodiac sign according to most of the ancient Vedic literatures. This not only makes these planets more interesting as well as confusing; it also complicates things for astrologers in particular. A number of astrologers believe that lordships of different planets over twelve signs of zodiac, from Aries to Pisces; is the most important aspect in deciding the benefic or malefic working nature of these planets. Whereas the other seven planets called Sun, Moon, Jupiter, Venus, Mars, Mercury and Saturn have been assigned lordships to zodiac signs; there is no mention of Rahu and Ketu for any such lordships. This makes things complicated for such astrologers as without a planet ruling a sign; they find it difficult to predict its nature.
As a result, there have been continuous efforts from astrologer across the globe since a great many years; to assign the co-lordship of some zodiac signs to Rahu and Ketu; if not the exclusive lordship. If that happens, then it becomes easy to define the working nature of Rahu and Ketu in a horoscope, since we now know the signs they rule. Whereas Rahu has been given co-lordship of Aquarius and Virgo; Ketu has been given the same for Scorpio and Pisces; by some astrologers from time to time. Some other astrologers are assigning other zodiac signs to Rahu and Ketu but one thing is sure; they simply have to assign lordship as otherwise; the mystery that surrounds these two planets seems impossible to uncover. This mystery is what makes them interesting as well as intriguing for astrologers who want to dig deep into this ocean of Vedic astrology.
This brings us to the million dollar question; is it absolutely necessary to assign zodiac signs to Rahu and Ketu? Can’t we simply consider them without the lordship of any zodiac signs; as the Vedic astrologers seemed to do during ancient times? I am going to leave the answers to these questions to your imagination and move forward with the main topic for this article. After being acquainted with these two mysterious planets called Rahu and Ketu; who have confused astrologers from old times; simply imagine how difficult will it be to predict the good or bad effects given by them; as well as those given by the good or bad Yogas formed by Rahu and Ketu in a horoscope. Though many astrologers have associated Rahu and Ketu with malefic Yogas only; I have experienced otherwise, during my journey through the ocean of Vedic astrology.
Just like all other planets among Navagraha, Rahu and Ketu can also be malefic as well as benefic in a horoscope; though the task to predict their benefic or malefic nature in a horoscope is one of the most difficult tasks in astrology. This is because both Rahu and Ketu don’t give relatively simpler clues like the other seven planets and they hide their working nature in mystery. During years of research and practice in the field of Vedic astrology; I have witnessed these two planets giving good as well as bad results to people. Though they can trouble you a lot when they are malefic in your horoscope, they can bless you with wonderful things when they are benefic in nature. When one or both of these planets are malefic in a horoscope; they may form various types of defects in such horoscope; and trouble the native through them; in many spheres of his life.
Some of these defects formed by Rahu and Ketu have been named as Angarak Yoga, Guru Chandal Yoga, Grahan Yoga and Pitra Dosh. However, the most fearsome defect made by Rahu and Ketu in a horoscope is called Kaal Sarp Yog or Kaal Sarp Dosh which has twelve different sub types or branches and which can trouble the natives under its effect in numerous possible ways. Before we proceed with the definition and explanation of Kaal Sarp Yog; one thing is worth mentioning and worth remembering. Any type of defect is formed in a horoscope, by malefic or negative planet or planets only; and I have found no exception to this rule during my journey of astrology. A planet simply can’t be benefic or good and troublesome or highly troublesome at the same time. Benefic planets make good Yogas and malefic planets make bad Yogas or defects. It is as simple as that and with this, we will move to the prevalent definition of Kaal Sarp Yog.
If in a horoscope, all seven planets except Rahu and Ketu are placed between the axis of Rahu and Ketu; Kaal Sarp Yog is said to be formed in such horoscope. For example, if Rahu is placed in first house of a horoscope, Ketu is placed in seventh house of the same horoscope and the remaining seven planets are placed; either between house number one to seven; or between house number seven to one, Kaal Sarp Yog is said to be formed in such horoscope. Rahu and Ketu always lie as well as move, exactly opposite to each other, which means they maintain a distance of 180 degrees. It means that in simple terms; if all seven planets except Rahu and Ketu in a horoscope are placed, only on one side of Rahu-Ketu axis, Kaal Sarp Yog is said to be formed in that horoscope. Once formed in a horoscope, Kaal Sarp Yog can trouble the native with problems in almost any sphere of his life; depending on the type of this defect, which means depending on the house of placement of Rahu and Ketu in such horoscope. It is further added that even if Moon lies outside the axis of Rahu and Ketu while the other six planets are inside this axis; Kaal Sarp Yog of lesser quantum or so to say; partial Kaal Sarp Yog is formed in the horoscope. The planets placed in the house of placement of Rahu and Ketu are considered to be enclosed by them.
If this prevalent definition of Kaal Sarp Yog is to be believed, about 25% people or more across the globe are born with Kaal Sarp Yog in their horoscopes. Looking at practical data, starting from 1 April 2019 and going till 17 July 2020, Kaal Sarp Yog is formed in the horoscopes of more than 80% people born during this time period; which extends to a length of more than 16 months. This doesn’t stop here and this arrangement keeps appearing every now and then for some months; as long as Saturn and Jupiter are separated from each other, by not more than seven signs. This is because, only four planets among Navagraha are slow moving and these are; Saturn which completes its transit through a zodiac sign in about 30 months, Jupiter which completes the same transit in about 12 months; and Rahu as well as Ketu which do the same job in about 18 months. As for the remaining planets; the average time period for their transit through one zodiac sign is 50 days or less; with Moon being the quickest as it leaves a sign in less than three days.
Starting from February 2016 and going till September 2023, which is a period of about seven and a half years, Saturn and Jupiter will maintain a distance of less than eight signs from each other. Based on this equation and making an approximation; about 50% of the people born during these seven and a half years will be affected by Kaal Sarp Yog; according to the prevalent definition. After this occurrence, Saturn and Jupiter will once again form this arrangement around December 2030, which is about 7 years from September 2023; and the same process of forming Kaal Sarp Yog in about 50% of the horoscopes will begin for about 7 years or so. Looking at this data, it can be concluded that Kaal Sarp Yog is found present in about 25% horoscopes around the globe.
This statement does not look very convincing since the good as well as bad yogas formed in the horoscopes are rare phenomena; which happen for some time and then disappear. Something like Kaal Sarp Yog which remains there for a continuous period of six months each year, over a period of about 7 years; then takes a break for 7 years and then again repeats the process; should be a norm and not a rare phenomenon. Looking at any period of six months when Kaal Sarp Yog is formed in the horoscopes of all the people born during this period; millions and millions of people are born during it. Some of them are baggers whereas some of them are billionaires, some of them suffer from various types of diseases whereas some of them are as healthy as it gets; and some of them are achievers in many spheres of their lives whereas some others are losers in most spheres of their lives.
If a bad yoga like Kaal Sarp Yog is formed in a horoscope and it actually does the kind of damage which is associated with it and which is true when it is actually formed in a horoscope; how can such yoga give us people living on the opposite extremes of most spheres of life; like mentioned earlier? It seems like a misconception and so it is; since it does not give consistent results and to be precise; it gives volatile results which keep defying one another. Since any defect when actually formed in a horoscope gives sustained results which may be bad or very bad but not good and bad; Kaal Sarp Yog also has to give these sustained results in order to qualify for being a bad yoga. This means that something has been left out from the prevalent definition of Kaal Sarp Yog. We will now try to look into it and find a definition which actually holds good for practical purposes.
As mentioned earlier, for any defect like Kaal Sarp Yog to give malefic results or to be a defect to start with; the planet or planets involved in it should be negative. It means when Rahu and Ketu are malefic in a horoscope and the primary condition for the formation of Kaal Sarp Yog meets in a horoscope; Kaal Sarp Yog is formed in such horoscope. On the other hand, if Rahu and Ketu are both benefic or one of them is benefic in a horoscope; Kaal Sarp Yog will not form in such horoscope. When it comes to real life, each and every planet keeps changing its benefic or malefic nature by percentage; with every passing minute or to be precise; with every passing second. As a result, an extremely benefic planet can turn into an average benefic planet within a matter of an hour; and it can turn into a malefic planet within a couple of hours though it can sometimes take more than that. Once a planet becomes malefic, the same process starts. It means such planet will reach its peak from being an average malefic to being extremely malefic, it will then decline in intensity and finally, it will start giving benefic results within the next two to six hours.
This process keeps repeating itself in a cycle, for each and every planet and that is what makes so many different types of planetary arrangements possible in various horoscopes. In practical terms, the continuously changing nature and intensity of all planets among Navagraha is responsible for producing billions of different people in the world; by means of billions of different arrangements of planetary energies as well as other energies. When we go this way; even within a period of alternate seven years; Kaal Sarp Yog will not form in every horoscope, since the most important criterion for the formation of every bad yoga including Kaal Sarp Yog will keep changing with every passing minute and hour. It means that for all the people born on a particular day when all seven planets among Navagraha are enclosed between Rahu and Ketu; some of them will have Kaal Sarp Yog whereas some others won’t have; depending on the benefic or malefic nature of Rahu and Ketu in their horoscopes. Now that we have reached this much clarity on this topic, let try to obtain a refined and proper definition for Kaal Sarp Yog.
If in a horoscope, all seven planets except Rahu and Ketu are placed between the axis of Rahu and Ketu; Kaal Sarp Yog is formed in such horoscope; provided both Rahu as well as Ketu are functional malefic for that horoscope. It means that even if one of them is benefic for such horoscope, Kaal Sarp Yog will not form in such horoscope. Once we have established that Kaal Sarp Yog forms in a particular horoscope, our job is not finished, but it only starts from there since there are so many facts related to this defect; that we need to investigate now. When the formation of Kaal Sarp Yog in a horoscope is confirmed, the next thing to look for is the intensity of this defect in that horoscope. The intensity of a good or bad yoga is its ability or strength to produce good or bad results; which means the quantum of such yoga. Taking an example from real life; a single needle can give someone a mild injury, a single bullet can kill a person, a single bomb can kill many people and a single nuke can kill an entire city.
It means that though bad yogas like Kaal Sarp Yog work like weapons against you; not all of them are nukes and some of them may be more like bullets or needles, which don’t cause that much damage; compared to the damage done by a nuke or a bomb. This is where finding the intensity or strength of a good or bad yoga comes handy. For a bad yoga like Kaal Sarp Yog, a strength of 25% or less means that this yoga is not capable of causing significant problems for the native; like a needle. When Kaal Sarp Yog achieves a strength of 40 to 50% in a horoscope, it can now cause significant but not serious problems in some spheres of your life; like a bullet. The same Kaal Sarp Yog reaches a strength of 70 to 75% in a horoscope; and it becomes serious like a bomb, which can cause so much damage in some spheres of your life. In rare cases; Kaal Sarp Yog reaches a strength of more than 90% and that is when it becomes a nuke. It means Kaal Sarp Yog so potent can cause a complete denial or complete destruction in some spheres of your life; depending on its field of impact, which is the next factor that we are going to analyse. The explanation for various strengths of Kaal Sarp Yog and their respective results holds good for all other good as well as bad Yogas formed in a horoscope.
After we have analysed the strength of Kaal Sarp Yog in a horoscope; the next thing to look for is its field of impact, which means we need to find the spheres of your life where it can cause problems. For this purpose, the house of placement of Kaal Sarp Yog is the primary criterion and based on this criterion; twelve different types of Kaal Sarp Yogas exist. For example, if Kaal Sarp Yog is formed when Rahu is placed in first house of a horoscope and Ketu is placed in seventh house of this horoscope; it is called Anant Kaal Sarp Yog. This type of Kaal Sarp Yog will cause damage; primarily to the significances of the first house and seventh house; which are the houses of placement of Rahu and Ketu in this horoscope, respectively. It means the health, lifespan, overall wellbeing and marriage of this native will be the primary targets of this type of Kaal Sarp Yog. Based on the strength of Anant Kaal Sarp Yog, the quantum of damage can be assessed.
Let’s understand an important fact before moving forward. The horoscope of a person represents all spheres of his life and these spheres in their entirety can be considered like a nation. It means that for astrological purposes; a person can be considered like a nation; which has so many different states, cities and people living in it and constituting it. Likewise, so many spheres of our lives and then the people or things related to those spheres are what make us whole. If a person falls seriously ill in a nation, it is like suffering from a needle for that country; given the vastness and complexity of that nation. If a person dies in the same nation, it can be considered like suffering from a bullet. Likewise, the suffering or death of a large number of people living in a vicinity can be compared to a bomb attack whereas if an entire city or state is wiped out; it qualifies as a nuclear attack.
We are like countries and nations; being a collection of many spheres and personality traits within us. The most important point to note here is that even if Kaal Sarp Yog is extremely strong and it causes damage on nuclear level; all is not lost; just like a country does not cease to exist; even if a city or state has been wiped out; though it is definitely a big loss for any country or nation. I have explained this fact because a number of people who think they are suffering from Kaal Sarp Yog are afraid that this defect will destroy each and every sphere of their lives. This is absolutely not true and any good or bad yoga will primarily cause damage to those spheres of your life; which are its primary target. These targets are identified by finding the house or houses of placement of all such planets forming a defect, like Kaal Sarp Yog.
Coming back to the main topic, Anant Kaal Sarp Yog mentioned earlier can cause problems related to health, lifespan and marriage of the native; where the quantum of these problems will vary, depending on the strength of this defect. However, this Kaal Sarp Yog will not directly affect the other spheres of this native’s life, represented by other houses of the horoscope. For instance, you can suffer from a strong Kaal Sarp Yog of the first type and you may still become a billionaire through profession, if the rest of your horoscope is supportive for that; since Anant Kaal Sarp Yog doesn’t primarily affect your profession.
Moving on, after we have confirmed the formation of Kaal Sarp Yog in a horoscope, assessed its strength, figured out the areas of life it is going to attack; the next thing to do is to check for other good or bad planetary placements or yogas, which may increase or decrease the damage indicated by Kaal Sarp Yog in a horoscope. It means that even if Kaal Sarp Yog is formed in your horoscope and it indicates bad results related to some spheres of your life; not all of these spheres may face the exact same quantum of this defect since some spheres may be improved or further deteriorated by other good or bad planets or yogas. For example, if Anant Kaal Sarp Yog of medium strength is formed in a horoscope with Rahu placed in first house in Aries and Ketu placed in seventh house in Libra; the primary targets of this yoga are health, lifespan and marriage. If in the same horoscope, Mars being the lord of ascendant as it rules Aries; is placed in tenth house in Capricorn which means Mars is exalted, the net results may change.
Since Mars achieves maximum strength in Capricorn; the ascendant gains additional strength which means the native may not face serious problems related to health or lifespan. Likewise, if benefic Venus is placed in second house of this horoscope in Taurus, the problems related to marriage may also reduce since seventh house deals with marriage, Venus rules the sign Libra, it becomes the lord of seventh house and it is strong in Taurus; which is another sign ruled by it. If there are no other troublesome factors in the horoscope of this native; related to health and marriage; the native may not face serious problems in these fields, despite the presence of Anant Kaal Sarp Yog which may be around 50 to 60% in strength.
On the other hand, if Anant Kaal Sarp Yog of medium strength is formed in a horoscope with Aries ascendant, and debilitated Mars is placed in fourth house in Cancer; the native may face even more problems related to his health and lifespan; unless there are other factors compensating for these fields. This is because Mars is the weakest in the sign of Cancer and hence it becomes unable to protect its significances; one of which includes the first house and its significances. Since the first house is afflicted by Kaal Sarp Yog and the lord of first house is very weak; the native may face serious problems related to his health; and he may not live as long as an average person does; unless there are some grace saving factors in his horoscope. Just to have an idea; the presence of exalted Mars in this horoscope having Anant Kaal Sarp Yog can reduce the strength of its impact on health and life of the native, by 20 to 30%, by giving strength to the first house, so that it may fight the affliction caused by Kaal Sarp Yog.
On the other hand, the presence of debilitated Mars in this horoscope having Anant Kaal Sarp Yog can increase the strength of its impact on health and life of the native, by 20 to 30%, by making the first house even weaker; making it more difficult to fight the affliction caused by Kaal Sarp Yog. Let’s take an example from real life to understand this concept in a better way. Suppose a person hits someone with a specific amount of force. In this case, the net damage caused by this person is not only dependant on the force put by him behind his strike; but it is also dependant on the ability of the other person to counteract, resist or absorb that force. It means a physically weak person may fall flat on ground with such strike whereas a physically strong or very strong person may not feel much impact. Imagine an average adult hitting a child with full force and then the same adult hitting a strong wrestler with the same force. The damage inflicted by the adult is the same; but the actual damage received by the child and the wrestler may be poles apart. Similarly, the damage indicated by Kaal Sarp Yog in a horoscope can increase or decrease, depending on this factor.
Moving on, just like the first house, the same may happen to the seventh house, in a negative manner. For instance, if Anant Kaal Sarp Yog of medium strength is formed in a horoscope with Aries ascendant, and debilitated Venus is placed in sixth house of this horoscope; the native may get married very late in his life or he may not get married throughout his life; unless there are some grace saving factors in his horoscope. Contrary to this; when Venus is placed in second house in Taurus; the native may get married at proper age or slightly later than that; despite the presence of Anant Kaal Sarp Yog of medium strength in his horoscope. You see, Kaal Sarp Yog with same strength is present in both the horoscopes; but the results are a lot different in both cases. It means that this step where we look for factors which may increase or decrease the damage done by Kaal Sarp Yog in a horoscope is a very important factor as it may change the results indicated by this defect to great extents.
Coming to the next factor; the overall theme of a horoscope should be checked in the next step; and this again is a very important factor. Though this factor can’t be contained in words or explanations like all other factors mentioned above; since it is so vast, ever changing and intuitive to judge; I’ll still give a glimpse of it. The overall theme of a horoscope includes the individual calculation as well as collective interaction of various planetary attributes in the same horoscope. These attributes include; the house of placement of each planet, the sign of placement of each planet, the nakshatra of placement of each planet, Navamsha and dashamsha placement of each planet; the study of conjunctions of some planets in the same house including the benefic or malefic nature of such planets, the house of placement, the sign of placement and nakshatras of placement of such planets. Moving on, the study of benefic or malefic aspects of planets on each other; including the same factors once again, as mentioned in case of conjunctions; should also be checked. Apart from this, there are other factors also; but I will leave this topic here since it is too vast to discuss and it is not the primary topic of this article.
Going ahead, after you have gone through all these steps and you have reached a conclusion about what type of damage and how much damage can a particular type of Kaal Sarp Yog do in a horoscope; the last thing to do is to check the timing of impact of such Kaal Sarp Yog. You should know that whether good or bad; each and every yoga in a horoscope comes with a timeline which activates it and before the arrival of that timeline; this yoga may not do much good or bad; even after being strong in a horoscope. Even after being activated; it may not keep hitting or blessing you with same strength throughout your life; and the quantum of results given by it may vary from time to time. This is what makes the study of astrology as well as yogas like Kaal Sarp Yog; more interesting as well as more challenging. Let’s try to understand this concept with the help of some explanations.
Suppose, Anant Kaal Sarp Yog of strength around 70 to 80% is present in a horoscope; it indicates health problems as well as an early death; and there are no grace saving factors in the horoscope. In such a case; the first logical question that should raise its head is, when is this native going to die? Though this native is likely to have a shorter lifespan due to the malefic impact of a strong Kaal Sarp Yog; should he die on his first day; after one year of his life or during the 40th year of his life? Since in real life; we don’t see that many people dying during their childhoods; it means there is more to this equation of good and bad yogas, than their formation and strength. These factors are called the timing of activation and the timing of impact of any good or bad yoga like Kaal Sarp Yog. The study of these factors includes the analysis of time of activation of Kaal Sarp Yog or any other Yoga; and then the study of time periods in the life of a native; when this defect may strike with maximum strength to cause maximum possible damage.
For example, if Anant Kaal Sarp Yog is present in a horoscope, it is as strong as 80%, it indicates the death of this native at an early age and there are no grace saving factors; the next important thing to know is its time of activation. Each and every yoga comes with different time of activation in different horoscopes. For Kaal Sarp Yog; the earliest it can be activated is at the time of birth of a native and the latest it can be activated is after the native completes 41 years of his age. It means if strong Anant Kaal Sarp Yog present in a horoscope is activated right from the birth of the native; it can kill him during the first few years of his life; or even within a few days; depending on the second part of this equation; called the timing of impact. Once a good or bad yoga like Kaal Sarp Yog has been activated; it will need to wait for a proper time window; in order to strike the most powerful blow that it can. The timing of impact is primarily seen from planetary periods called MahaDashas; especially Vimshottari Mahadashas, the running transitory equations and from some other factors.
Therefore, if strong Anant Kaal Sarp Yog is present in a horoscope and the time of activation is 35 years of native’s age; this defect can’t kill the native before the age of 35 since it is not fully activated; though it may keep causing some health problems or accidents which may not be serious; even during its dormant state. As this Anant Kaal Sarp Yog wakes up at the age of 35 of this native; it now searches for the first available time window which may give it the opportunity to strike the strongest blow which means an event causing the death of this native. If such window opens around the age of 38 years of this native and it remains opened till his age of 39; Anant Kaal Sarp Yog is likely to kill this native during this time period. This window may be caused by the beginning of a Rahu or Ketu Mahadasha or AntraDasha during this time; a troublesome transit of Rahu and Ketu; a troublesome Sade Sati of Saturn which has the potential to cause death like damage or by some other factors like this. Hence the native does not have threat to his life from Anant Kaal Sarp Yog, till his age of 38 years.
Likewise, Anant Kaal Sarp Yog will cause maximum damage to the marriage of a native; after its activation and during a proper window after activation. For example, let’s assume Anant Kaal Sarp Yog is strong in a horoscope and based on the overall horoscope; it indicates a divorce or more than one divorce. If Anant Kaal Sarp Yog is activated by birth; the native may get married and he may get divorced soon after marriage; as soon as this defect finds the first window to strike. On the other hand, if strong Anant Kaal Sarp Yog is present in a horoscope but it activates at the age of 40; the native may get married and he may sustain his marriage; though with some problems. However as he reaches 40 and Anant Kaal Sarp Yog activates; serious problems may start appearing in his marriage. As a result; the native may get divorced within a few years after his age of 40; as soon as such Anant Kaal Sarp Yog finds a suitable time window to strike.
Similarly, if strong Anant Kaal Sarp Yog present in a horoscope indicates no marriage for the native; and such Kaal Sarp Yog is active from birth; the native may not get married throughout his life; unless there are some compensating factors in his horoscope. On the other hand, if strong Anant Kaal Sarp Yog present in a horoscope denies marriage to the native but it activates at his age of 40, the result changes. The native suffering from such Kaal Sarp Yog may get married, he may get divorced or widowed soon after his age of 40 and he may not get married again, throughout his life.
Let’s now summarise important facts about the formation as well as functioning of Kaal Sarp Yog in a horoscope. First of all, all planets should be contained by Rahu and Ketu where Moon can be treated as an exception in some cases. Secondly and most importantly; both Rahu and Ketu should be functionally malefic in the horoscope, for the formation of such Kaal Sarp Yog. After the confirmation for formation of this defect in a horoscope, the strength of this defect, the field of impact of this defect, the grace saving factors against this defect, the factors providing more strength to his defect, the overall theme of the horoscope, the timing of activation of this defect and finally; the timing of impact of Kaal Sarp Yog should be determined; in order to reach a proper conclusion about the overall impact of this defect in a horoscope.
After doing all this, the next step is to find astrological remedies which can reduce the quantum of this defect; so that the native may find some relief from the malefic effects of Kaal Sarp Yog. Looking at such remedies; the malefic effects as well as strength of Kaal Sarp Yog can be reduced with the help of specific Poojas, Gemstones, Yantras and Donations, whichever of them are applicable in case of a native under consideration. When it comes to Poojas, they can be used to reduce the strength of any malefic yoga including Kaal Sarp Yog; as well as to increase the benefic effect of a good Yoga like Budh Aditya Yoga or Gaj Kesari Yoga. The most widely used Pooja to reduce the malefic effects of Kaal Sarp Yog in a horoscope is Kaal Sarp Yog Nivaran Pooja.
Whereas Poojas can be used for malefic as well as benefic yogas in a horoscope; gemstones are limited in this respect and they should be used for positive yogas or positive planets only. A gemstone simply increases the strength of its corresponding planet in a horoscope and it does not do anything to the working nature of such planet. It means if a planet is functionally malefic in a horoscope; wearing the gemstone for such planet will provide more strength to that planet, which may increase the quantum of bad results given by that planet. For this reason, people suffering from Kaal Sarp Yog should never wear the gemstones belonging to Rahu and Ketu; which are Hessonite and Cat’s Eye, respectively. Wearing these gemstones will provide more strength to Rahu and Ketu. As a result, Kaal Sarp Yog present in the horoscope gains additional strength; and the damage done by it increases. Hence you may easily end up making Kaal Sarp Yog present in your horoscope 80% strong by wearing the gemstones for Rahu and Ketu; when the original strength of this defect is 50% in your horoscope.
So how do we use gemstones to fight Kaal Sarp Yog, if they can’t be worn for Rahu and Ketu since they will always be negative; if Kaal Sarp Yog is formed in a horoscope. The gemstones are worn to give strength to the planets which rule the houses affected by Rahu and Ketu through Kaal Sarp Yog; provided such planets themselves are positive. For example, if Anant Kaal Sarp Yog is formed in a horoscope with Aries ascendant; the gemstones for Mars and Venus can be worn to reduce the damage done by this defect; if and only if Mars and Venus are functionally benefic in such horoscope. It means if Mars is malefic and Venus is benefic in this horoscope, the gemstone for Venus alone should be worn and gemstone for Mars should not be worn. As malefic Mars gains more strength through its gemstone; it may start causing more problems on its own and in some cases, it may even end up strengthening the Kaal Sarp Yog present in the horoscope.
This the why gemstones can be used selectively to reduce the malefic effects of Kaal Sarp Yog in a horoscope. If both Mars and Venus are benefic in the horoscope, their gemstones can be worn and they may easily reduce the strength of such Kaal Sarp Yog by 25% to 50%, depending on the overall horoscope. However, in cases where both Mars and Venus are functionally malefic in one such horoscope having Kaal Sarp Yog; none of their gemstones should be worn. It means in one such case, the application of gemstones will provide no direct relief from Kaal Sarp Yog and we will have to look for other remedies like Poojas, yantras and donations. Whereas Poojas work well for each type of good or bad yoga formed in a horoscope; the application of yantras and donations is selective; just like the gemstones. It means these remedies should also be used in certain specific cases and not in all the cases of Kaal Sarp Yog or any other good or bad yoga.
