Kaal Sarp Yog has become very popular in the recent times and many people have mentioned during consultations that they have been told by some other astrologers that they have Kaal Sarp Yog in their horoscopes. These people wanted to know whether they actually had Kaal Sarp Yog in their horoscopes or not. After careful and deep analysis of thousands of such horoscopes, I have found that at least 8 out of 10 people said to have this defect do not have Kaal Sarp Yog in their horoscopes and it was only incomplete knowledge of the astrologers reading their horoscopes that led them to believe that they have Kaal Sarp Yog in their horoscopes. Since the presence of this defect is associated with some of the most difficult to handle types of problems in the life of the native, it is natural for a native to be scared on being informed that he is suffering from Kaal Sarp Yog. Before continuing with the discussion, let’s first take a look at the prevalent definition of Kaal Sarp Yog.
If in a horoscope, all the seven planets among navagraha namely Sun, Moon, Jupiter, Venus, Mars, Mercury and Saturn come between the axis of Rahu and Ketu, which are also known as north node and south node respectively, the native is said to have Kaal Sarp Yog in his horoscope. For example, if Rahu is placed in the first house of a horoscope in the sign of Aries, Ketu is placed in the seventh house of this horoscope in the sign of Libra and all the seven planets among navagraha are placed between house number one to house number seven, Kaal Sarp Yog is said to be formed in the horoscope. Similarly if Rahu is placed in the first house of a horoscope in the sign of Aries, Ketu is placed in the seventh house of this horoscope in the sign of Libra and all the seven planets among navagraha are placed between house number seven to house number one, Kaal Sarp Yog is said to be formed in the horoscope. Many astrologers believe that the presence of Moon outside the axis of Rahu and Ketu doesn’t make much difference and this defect is still formed, if the rest of the six planets are inside Rahu and Ketu axis. This defect is also known as Kaal Sarp Dosh.
The formation of Kaal Sarp Yog is associated with many types of serious problems in the life of the native, depending on the house of placement of Rahu as well as that of Ketu. For example, Kaal Sarp Dosh formed when Rahu is placed in the first house and Ketu is placed in the seventh house may create serious problems related to health and marriage of the native. Similarly, Kaal Sarp Yog formed due to the presence of Rahu in fifth house and Ketu in eleventh house can cause serious problems in the profession of the native; and it can also trouble him with problems related to childbirth. Likewise, Kaal Sarp Dosh formed due to the presence of Rahu and Ketu in other houses of a horoscope can afflict the native with serious problems in many spheres of his life.
Whereas there is no doubt that Kaal Sarp Yog of good strength formed in a horoscope can trouble the native with the already mentioned problems, as well as with many other types of problems, its formation is not as frequent, as it is said to be. To simplify it with the help of a practical example, let’s consider the formation of this defect in the horoscopes of the people born all across the world between 20th of July 1976 and 3rd of August 1976 which is a period of about 15 days approximately. If we make and analyze different horoscopes with different dates of birth, times of birth and places of birth where the dates of birth are between the above mentioned time ranges, we can easily see that Rahu was placed in Libra during this entire period and Ketu was placed in Aries during this entire period. All the other planets were placed between Aries and Libra during this period, which means that all the people born all across the world during this period of time are having one or the other type of Kaal Sarp Dosh in their horoscopes.
For example, all the people born during the above mentioned period of time who have Libra as their ascendant rising, have Anant Kaal Sarp Yog because Rahu is placed in the first house of their horoscopes as it was transiting through Libra during that period and Ketu is placed in the seventh house of their horoscopes as it was transiting through Aries during that period. Hence Rahu is placed in the first house, Ketu is placed in the seventh house and all other planets are placed in the houses from seven to one which means houses like 8, 9, 10 etc. Anant Kaal Sarp Dosh is said to be formed when in a horoscope, Rahu is placed in the first house, Ketu is placed in the seventh house and all the other planets are placed between the first and the seventh house or between the seventh and the first house.
The above example clearly shows that according to the prevalent definition of Kaal Sarp Yog, all the people born across the world during the above mentioned 15 days have Kaal Sarp Dosh in their horoscopes. Going further, it can be easily found out that half the people born during the period which ranges from 20th of June 1976 to 20th of October 1976, have Kaal Sarp Yog in their horoscopes as Moon was the only planet which kept getting in and out of Rahu and Ketu axis whereas all the other planets were inside the axis of Rahu and Ketu for the above mentioned period of about 4 months. So whenever Moon transited from Aries to Libra during these four months which is about 15 days per month, all the people born during that period were born with Kaal Sarp Dosh in their horoscopes. If we take into account those astrologers also, who state that the presence of Moon outside Rahu Ketu axis does not make much difference in the formation of Kaal Sarp Yog, all the people born in the world during these four months have Kaal Sarp Dosh in their horoscopes.
As millions of people were born all across the globe during the above mentioned time period, it can be easily concluded that according to the prevalent definition of Kaal Sarp Yog, all those millions of people have Kaal Sarp Dosh in their horoscopes; and accordingly each one of them should suffer from very serious types of problems associated with this defect. Looking even deeper, such combinations of above mentioned 4 months or even 6 months keep appearing from time to time; making more and more people of the world have Kaal Sarp Yog in their horoscopes. This statement doesn’t hold true in actual practice as millions of people with different horoscopes and different destinies were born during the above mentioned time periods. Some of them have become very rich and some of them very poor, some of them enjoy very good married lives while some have serious problems in their marriages. Similarly some of these people are blessed on some other front of their lives whereas some others are suffering a lot, on the same front.
Looking at these statistics, we can easily conclude that they don’t match the data from real life, which means that millions of people born during the same four months are suffering very much, only in theory and not in practical. Hence the formation of Kaal Sarp Dosh in the horoscopes of all the people born during this period of four months can’t be true, which means it’s false. This further tells us that the prevalent definition of Kaal Sarp Yog is flawed and it is not a valid definition. It should also be noted that all the yogas and defects mentioned in astrology are rare and they are not the ones which keep forming for a continuous period of 15 days or 4 months. Something that keeps happening for 15 days is a routine and not a rare yoga. Hence Kaal Sarp Dosh is not formed in the way its prevalent definition states.
This is the time to know that the presence of all planets among navagraha between the axis of Rahu and Ketu is the primary condition for the formation of Kaal Sarp Yog, and it is not the only condition. There are other conditions which need to be met before the formation of Kaal Sarp Dosh can be confirmed in a horoscope. These are the conditions which make this defect, a rare to form defect, which is how it should be. Let’s now take a look at these additional conditions which must be met in order for Kaal Sarp Yog to properly form in a horoscope.
After the primary condition for the formation of Kaal Sarp Dosh is met in a horoscope, as a second condition, the working nature of Rahu and Ketu must be negative in that horoscope. It should be understood that a defect is a negative phenomenon and it can only take place if the planets involved in its formation are negative. Can you imagine two positive planets forming a negative combination in a horoscope? Well I can’t imagine this and so can’t you. This is the fact that I have asserted time and time again in case of all the defects that the planets involved in the formation of such defects must be negative. Positive planets will form positive yogas in horoscopes, and not defects. Hence both Rahu and Ketu should be negative in a horoscope in order to form Kaal Sarp Yog in that horoscope.
Kaal Sarp Dosh is the defect where negative Rahu and Ketu restrict the energy of all other planets between their axis and they don’t let this energy expand beyond their axis, which limits the scope of the native. However this restriction is only possible if both of them are restrictive, which means both of them are negative. Even if one of them is positive, it will allow the energy of other planets to expand beyond its barrier and it may even join and enhance that energy. Therefore, even if one of them is positive and one of them is negative, Kaal Sarp Yog will not form in horoscope and the negative planet among the two will simply produce the effect like any other negative planet, but not like Kaal Sarp Dosh. Hence the second condition says, both Rahu and Ketu should be negative in the horoscope.
Looking at the third and final condition, both Rahu and Ketu should be fully active in the horoscope under consideration. This is the time to know that not all the planets are fully active in your horoscope right from the time of your birth. Some of them may be active from your birth, some of them may become fully active at your age of twenty and some of them may not become fully active even till the time of your death. This is what separates the destinies of people who seem to have the same horoscopes with all the planets in the same houses and in the same signs. Though these horoscopes look the same, the natives experience different results in their lives. The reason is obvious; some of them have more number of fully active planets in their horoscopes, whether positive or negative, whereas some others have less number of fully active planets in their horoscopes.
During my study of thousands of different horoscopes, I have observed that even though two people had all the planets between Rahu and Ketu placed in the same houses in their horoscopes, even though both Rahu and Ketu were negative in their horoscopes, the results were still different. One of these natives reported to suffer from all the problems related to his type of Kaal Sarp Yog whereas the other one reported to suffer from almost none of them. This creates the need for the third condition, which is the fact that both Rahu and Ketu should be fully active in a horoscope, in order to form Kaal Sarp Dosh in that horoscope.
Since it is difficult as well as rare for all these three conditions to meet at the same time in a horoscope, this set of conditions makes Kaal Sarp Yog a rare to form defect and not something that can be found in the horoscopes of millions and millions of people. Hence all the planets should be inside Rahu and Ketu; both Rahu and Ketu should work negatively and they should both be fully active in a horoscope, in order to form Kaal Sarp Dosh in that horoscope. When all these three conditions meet in a horoscope, we can safely say that Kaal Sarp Yog is present in that horoscope.
However our job is not done, even when we are sure that Kaal Sarp Dosh is present in a horoscope. This is because the case study of a horoscope doesn’t conclude at the presence of Kaal Sarp Yog in that horoscope, it only begins with that. Once you know Kaal Sarp Dosh is present in a horoscope, there are many other factors to be considered. The most important of these factors is the strength of Kaal Sarp Yog in a horoscope under consideration, like the strength of any other defect. The strength of Kaal Sarp Dosh is a very important factor and it can make all the difference in case of different natives who may suffer from Kaal Sarp Yog. For example, a native suffering from Kaal Sarp Dosh may have this defect with strength of 20%, another native suffering this defect may witness its strength as 60% in his horoscope; and yet another native may suffer from Kaal Sarp Yog possessing strength of 80% or even more.
It is obvious that the results will be different in all these three cases. The person with 20% strong Kaal Sarp Dosh is only likely to feel some heat of this defect due to which the results related to some spheres of his life may be delayed and underperforming, but they can’t be denied. This is because this defect is not strong enough in his horoscope to cause denials. The person with 60% strong Kaal Sarp Yog may see long delays in some spheres of his life and he may witness some denials also, as the defect is significantly strong in his case. Coming to the person with 80% strong Kaal Sarp Dosh, he may witness denial in some spheres of his life, as the defect is very strong. For example, if such Kaal Sarp Yog is affecting his marriage, he may not get married throughout his life or he may choose to remain single after three or four broken marriages, depending on the rest of his horoscope. Similarly, if such Kaal Sarp Dosh is affecting his profession, he may not witness significant professional success till the end of his life. Hence it is very important to determine the strength of Kaal Sarp Yog in a horoscope, once it is found present in that horoscope.
The second important factor is the age of the person when Kaal Sarp Dosh gets activated in his horoscope. It should be noted that whether good or bad, not all the yogas are activated from your birth. Some of them may be active from the time of your birth, some of them may get activated during young age and some of them may get activated during old age. Accordingly this factor alone can change the results. For example, a person with 80% strong Kaal Sarp Yog affecting his marriage may not get married if this defect is activated from birth, whereas a person with 80% strong Kaal Sarp Dosh activating at the age of 50 and affecting his marriage may witness a timely and happy marriage. However his wife may either die or leave him soon after the age of 50 and he may never witness marital pleasures after that. You see, how the change in the time of activation of a defect can change the results, even though the other factors remain the same.
Considering one more important factor, the field of impact of Kaal Sarp Yog in a horoscope should also be considered properly, before assessing the damage done by this defect. The field of impact of Kaal Sarp Dosh in a horoscope is the area or areas of the life of the affected native, which are likely to witness the negative impact caused by this defect. For example, a person suffering from a strong Kaal Sarp Yog with its field of impact being his marriage may not get married but he may do very well in his profession. Similarly a person suffering from a strong Kaal Sarp Dosh with its field of impact being his health may witness many health problems and diseases, though his marriage as well as profession may be very good. Likewise, a person under the impact of a strong Kaal Sarp Yog with its field of impact being his children may not have any children, though he may enjoy good profession, marriages and health. Looking at yet another possibility, a person suffering from a strong Kaal Sarp Dosh with its field of impact being his lifespan may die at a young age, though he may enjoy all other pleasures before his death.
Moving on to the next factor, the presence of any strong benefic planets or strong benefic combination of planets can reduce the strength of Kaal Sarp Yog in a horoscope whereas the presence of a malefic planet or a malefic planetary combination can increase the strength of Kaal Sarp Dosh in a horoscope. For example, Kaal Sarp Yog affecting the marriage of a native may gain additional strength if malefic Mars forms Manglik Dosh in that horoscope. As a result, the native may witness very bad or extremely bad results related to his marriage, like not getting married throughout his life or suffering from multiple broken marriages, depending on his overall horoscope.
On the other hand, the damage caused by Kaal Sarp Dosh affecting the marriage of a native may be reduced if benefic Mars forms Manglik Yoga in the horoscope or if some other benefic planetary combination supporting marriage is present in the horoscope. The native in this case may witness delay in marriage but he may eventually get married or he may witness serious problems in his marriage, but he may eventually get through those problems. Hence the presence of other benefic or malefic planets or planetary combinations in a horoscope having Kaal Sarp Yog is also an important factor and it should be considered with due attention.
Though there are some other points worth considering while determining the formation of Kaal Sarp Dosh in a horoscope, as well as while assessing the damage caused by it; the above mentioned aspects are the most important ones and considering them properly will ensure a better calculation of Kaal Sarp Yog and the damages caused by it in a horoscope. The other factors include the presence of Rahu and Ketu is specific signs, in specific nakshatras, the gender of the native and some other factors. For example, a child affecting Kaal Sarp Dosh is likely to trouble a female native more than a male native, though the defect may have same strength in both the horoscope. Similarly, a child affecting Kaal Sarp Yog with Rahu in fifth house in the sign of Taurus or Cancer may cause a delay, whereas the same defect with Rahu in fifth house in the sign of Scorpio may cause a denial.
Going deeper in the same case, a child affecting Kaal Sarp Dosh with Rahu in fifth house in the sign of Cancer as well as in the nakshatra of Ashlesha can make the native wait more compared to the same defect with Rahu in Cancer as well as in the nakshatra of Pushya, in order to have his first child. Hence all the aspects related to Kaal Sarp Yog must be studied carefully and only then a conclusion should be reached.
Vedic astrology is equipped with many remedies that can reduce the strength of Kaal Sarp Dosh formed in a horoscope. These remedies include the application of gemstones, yantras, poojas and charities. Doing suitable remedies can certainly help reduce the strength of this defect and the native may witness better or much better results in the spheres of his life, which are affected by Kaal Sarp Yog in his horoscope.
