According to its definition prevalent in Vedic astrology, if Sun or Moon is placed with either one of Rahu or Ketu in a horoscope, Grahan Yoga is formed in the horoscope, which can trouble the native with very serious types of problems related to different spheres of his life, including extreme poverty, diseases, defame and shorter lifespan; depending on his overall horoscope.  In this chapter, we will discuss the formation as well as the results of Grahan Yoga, in a scientific way.

Grahan means to have or to eat and hence the name of this Yog suggests that Rahu or Ketu eat Sun or Moon whenever they are placed with them. In practical language, Rahu or Ketu may destroy the general as well as specific significances of Sun or Moon through Grahan Yoga. Since Sun and Moon are the two most important planets in Vedic Astrology, such serious afflictions to these planets may affect the overall theme and strength of a horoscope and hence the native may fail in almost every sphere of his life. This is why the placement of Rahu or Ketu with Sun or Moon is considered as an Eclipse or Grahan for such horoscope.

Moving on, there are twelve houses in a horoscope and there are twelve signs in all. It means that the probability of Sun being placed with Rahu or Ketu in a particular house or in a particular sign is 2 out 12. For example, if Sun is placed in the first house of a horoscope, the placement of Rahu or the placement of Ketu in the first house along with Sun will form Grahan Yoga according to its definition. Since the chances of Rahu being placed in 1 out of 12 houses is 1 in 12 and the same holds for the placement of Ketu; the chances of one of them being placed with Sun are 2 out of twelve. Hence every sixth native is suffering from Grahan Yoga, merely on the basis of placement of Sun with Rahu or Ketu.

Similarly, if Moon is placed in the first house of a horoscope, the placement of Rahu or the placement of Ketu in the first house along with Moon will form Grahan Yoga according to its definition. Since the chances of Rahu being placed in 1 out of 12 houses is 1 in 12 and the same holds for the placement of Ketu; the chances of one of them being placed with Moon are 2 out of twelve. Hence every sixth native is suffering from Grahan Yoga, merely on the basis of placement of Moon with Rahu or Ketu. Combining the results of Grahan Yoga formed due to placement of Rahu or Ketu with Sun and those of Grahan Yoga formed due to placement of Rahu or Ketu with Moon; Grahan Yoga forms in almost every third horoscope.

Accordingly, every third person in this world should be facing the problems indicated by this Yog and he should suffer a lot. As this is clearly not happening in reality, there must be something wrong or incomplete with the definition of Grahan Yoga. We will now look into a set of extra conditions which are essential for the formation of Grahan Yoga in a horoscope, apart from this primary condition.

As already mentioned in case of a number of good and bad Yogas, the working nature of all the planets involved in the formation of a good or bad Yog is an essential condition. It means that for a good Yog to be formed due to the combination of more than one planet; all the planets involved in it should be working positively in that horoscope. Similarly, for a bad Yog to form in a horoscope due to the combination of more than one planet; all or at least one of those planets should be working negatively in that horoscope. Hence in case of Grahan Yoga, Rahu or Ketu must be negative in the horoscope, in order for this Yog to form properly in such horoscope.

Considering the possible combinations of Sun with Rahu, there may broadly be four such combinations. A combination of positive Sun and positive Rahu; a combination of positive Sun and negative Rahu; a combination of negative Sun with positive Rahu or a combination of negative Sun and negative Rahu may form in a horoscope, whenever these two planets are joined by placement or aspect.

Now considering the possible combinations of Sun with Ketu, there may broadly be four such combinations. A combination of positive Sun and positive Ketu; a combination of positive Sun and negative Ketu; a combination of negative Sun with positive Ketu or a combination of negative Sun and negative Ketu may form in a horoscope, whenever these two planets are joined by placement or aspect.

Looking at the combinations of Sun and Rahu; only two out of these four combinations may form Grahan Yoga and these two combinations are positive Sun with negative Rahu; and negative Sun with negative Rahu. The remaining two combinations which are positive Sun with positive Rahu and negative Sun with positive Rahu may not result in the formation of Grahan Yoga in the horoscope.

This is due to the fact that for the formation of this Yog in a horoscope, Rahu must be negative. Positive Rahu on the other hand, may bless the native with good or very good qualities and it may add extra value to the qualities rendered by Sun; if Sun is positive. Hence Grahan Yoga may not form in both these cases as Rahu is positive in these cases. Similar explanation can be used for Sun-Ketu combinations and only two out of four possible combinations of these two planets may form Grahan Yoga in the horoscope, where Ketu is working negatively. Likewise, only two out of four combinations of Moon with Rahu and Moon with Ketu may form Grahan Yoga and the remaining two combinations in each one of these cases may not form Grahan Yoga, where Ketu is positive.

Let’s now look at these combinations one by one in case of Sun and Rahu; and see what may happen in all these cases. If positive Sun is placed with negative Rahu in the first house of a horoscope, Grahan Yoga may form in such horoscope as negative Rahu may afflict Sun. Such Grahan Yoga may trouble the native with many types of problems related to many spheres of his life, depending on the sign of placement of this Yog as well as depending on the overall tone of the horoscope.

For example, the formation of Grahan Yoga in the first house of a horoscope due to the placement of Sun and malefic Rahu in the sign of Virgo may prove bad for the native in many spheres of his life, depending on the rest of his horoscope. If strong and supported by an overall negative horoscope, this type of Grahan Yoga may force extreme poverty or extreme types of failures on the native. Similarly, Grahan Yoga formed in the first house of a horoscope due to the placement of Sun with malefic Ketu in the sign of Virgo may trouble the native with life threatening diseases and it may kill the native at a young age, when strong and supported by an overall negative horoscope.

Moving on to the second combination, the combination of malefic Sun with malefic Rahu can also form Grahan Yoga in the horoscope and this type of Grahan Yoga may prove even more destructive for the native. This is because both Sun and Rahu are negative in this case. Hence malefic Rahu may adversely affect the significances of Sun whereas malefic Sun may adversely affect the significances of Rahu. As a result, the native suffering from such Grahan Yoga may suffer from serious types of problems.

For instance, the placement of such Grahan Yoga in the tenth house of a horoscope may provoke the native to engage in some of the worst types of immoral or criminal practices. As a result, this native may engage in serious types of crimes, depending on the overall tone of his horoscope. In the worst cases of this type of Grahan Yoga when the overall horoscope is strong and negative; the native may become a hardcore criminal and he may be severely punished by the law of his land.

Looking at the third possibility, the combination of malefic Sun with benefic Rahu may not lead to the formation of Grahan Yoga in a horoscope; as Rahu is positive in this example. In this case, malefic Sun may negatively affect the significances of Rahu due to which the native may suffer from problems related to these significances. For example, the formation of this type of bad Yog in a relevant house of a horoscope can make the native suffer from many types of psychological problems and in extreme cases of this type; the native may completely go insane. Such native may have to spend many years of his life in a mental asylum or he may even commit suicide under the bout of insanity.

The fourth possible combination is the combination of positive Sun with positive Rahu. This is the combination which can never form Grahan Yoga as both these planets are positive. On the contrary, this combination can produce some of the best types of people in their relevant categories, during their times. For example, the formation of this good Yog in the tenth house of a horoscope can bless the native with very good amount of professional success depending on the overall tone of his horoscope. If the overall horoscope of one such native is strong and positive, this Yog may bless him with a post of high authority, very good amount of fame through a creative field or very good amount of money and wealth through business.

It can be seen that the results are different in case of these four combinations and hence Grahan Yoga should not be considered formed in a horoscope, merely due to the combination of Rahu with Sun. Similar explanations can be used for the combinations of Sun with Ketu, Moon with Rahu and Moon with Ketu. Hence the working nature of Rahu or Ketu making a combination with Sun or Moon must be negative in a horoscope, in order to form Grahan Yoga in that horoscope.

After this, the strength of such Rahu or Ketu and even the strength of Sun or Moon are checked in order to determine the quantum of negative results such Grahan Yoga may cause. The level of activity of these planets is also checked and only then the net strength of Grahan Yoga may be assessed in a horoscope. For example, if Grahan Yoga forms in a horoscope due to the combination of benefic Sun with malefic Rahu but the net strength of this Yog comes out under 20% due to weakness of Rahu; it may not do any significant damage. As any good or bad Yog less than 20% in strength is not capable of producing significant results, the presence of such Grahan Yoga may not be a cause of concern for the native and he shouldn’t worry about it.

On the other hand, if the same Grahan Yoga gains strength of 80% or more due to strong and active Rahu in the horoscope; the native may suffer from problems of very high quantum in many spheres of his life. The same holds true in case of Grahan Yoga formed by a combination of Sun with Ketu, Moon with Rahu or Moon with Ketu in a horoscope. Hence the net strength of Grahan Yoga should be checked in a horoscope before reaching any conclusions about this Yog.

Combining all these results, we can now reach the refined and logical definition of Grahan Yoga. If in a horoscope, Sun or Moon makes a combination with malefic and active Rahu or Ketu, Grahan Yoga may be formed in the horoscope, which may trouble the native with many types of problems depending on the overall tone of his horoscope.

Once the formation of this defect is confirmed, the next thing to check is the influence of other good or bad planets on Sun or Moon as well as on the one among Rahu and Ketu which is involved in the formation of this Yog with Sun. For example, if Grahan Yoga is formed in the first house of a horoscope due to the placement of benefic Sun with malefic Rahu in the sign of Capricorn; the addition of benefic Venus to this combination may change the results considerably.

This is because the addition of benefic Venus may render more positive energy to this house. As a result, the net energy of this house may become positive because the strong positive energies of Sun and Venus may completely dominate the negative energy of Rahu. Hence Grahan Yoga may form in theory only and it may not trouble the native in practice. It should be noted that when supported by the overall horoscope, this combination can bless the native with a post of high authority in the house of government through politics or through job.

On the other hand, if in the same example, malefic Venus is placed in the first house of this horoscope along with benefic Sun and malefic Rahu; the results may become disastrous. The negative energy of Venus may join the negative energy of Rahu and Grahan Yoga may gain additional strength. As a result, the native troubled by such Grahan Yoga and Venus may suffer from problems of high intensity; depending on the overall tone of his horoscope. For instance, such a native may suffer from serious health problems and he may even die at a young age. Hence the influence of other good and bad planets on this Yog should be analyzed carefully.

After doing so, the overall tone of a horoscope should be checked properly as this factor alone can change each and every thing in some cases. For example, if Grahan Yoga is present in a horoscope and at the same time; the overall theme of the horoscope is positive and it has a strong positive Yog like Shasha Yoga, Malavya Yoga or Hamsa Yoga, the native may not suffer much. The overall strong horoscope and a Yog like Shasha Yoga may give this native sufficient strength to deal with the negative energy generated by Grahan Yoga and he may get through most problems created by this Yog, with minimum damage.

On the other hand, if Grahan Yoga is present in a horoscope; the overall theme of the horoscope is negative and it has another bad Yog like Pitra Dosh or Kaal Sarp Yog; the results may be disastrous. The overall negative horoscope of this native may aggravate these problems and the native may suffer from serious health problems, extreme poverty or even an early death, depending on the overall tone of his horoscope. Hence the overall tone of the horoscope having Grahan Yoga in it should be checked properly; as it can change the results significantly.

Coming to the last but not the least, the impact of running times should also be checked in order to further fine tune the effects given by Grahan Yoga in a horoscope. It should be noted that any type of good or bad Yog becomes duly effective, if one of the planets involved in its formation is leading the running times. As a result, the native may witness the strongest negative effects of Grahan Yoga if he is hit by the planetary periods of Sun, Moon, Rahu or Ketu during relevant years of his age. This very simple looking fact may not change the type of problems you may face due to the influence of Grahan Yoga in many cases; however it may change the quantum of such problems to a great extent.

For example, if Grahan Yoga is formed in the first house of a horoscope and the overall theme of the horoscope is negative, the native may suffer from health problems which may change in quantum, depending on the running time. If a negative planetary period hits this native and such period is not ruled by Sun, Moon, Rahu or Ketu; the native may suffer from health problems of medium intensity.

However, as soon as the planetary period of Sun, Moon, Rahu or Ketu hits this native; whichever one of them is the most troublesome in his horoscope; he may face problems of very serious types. Such planetary period may trouble him with serious health issues, multiple surgeries and with an early death; depending on the overall tone of his horoscope. It should be noted that among these four planets; only the planetary periods of the planets involved in the formation of Grahan Yoga may cause such problems of significant intensity.

It means if a combination of benefic Sun with malefic Rahu forms such Grahan Yoga; the planetary periods of Sun may cause problems of medium intensity whereas the planetary periods of Rahu may cause problems of high intensity. However, the planetary periods of Moon and Ketu in this case may not cause problems of high or medium intensity as none of them is involved in the formation of Grahan Yoga. Similar explanations can be used for other combinations of these four planets, which result in the formation of Grahan Yoga in a horoscope.

It should also be noted that if both the planets involved in the formation of Grahan Yoga are negative, like malefic Sun and malefic Rahu in the present example; the planetary periods of both these planets may cause problems of high intensity. These details are important as they can change the quantum of net results in a significant manner. For instance, if Grahan Yoga considered in this example is formed by benefic Sun with malefic Rahu, planetary periods of Sun may prove troublesome but they may not cause health problems of high intensity. On the other hand, if such Grahan Yoga is formed by malefic Sun with malefic Rahu; the planetary periods of Sun may cause problems of high intensity and they may be fully capable of even killing the native.

Therefore, each and every important aspect should be checked thoroughly and only then the results indicated by Grahan Yoga should be calculated. Above all, it should always be kept in mind that the combination of Sun or Moon with Rahu or Ketu may be positive and it may produce some of the most wonderful people in this world; while you may be seeing them as very bad people due to the formation of Grahan Yoga in their horoscopes. Hence don’t fall for the combination of Sun with Rahu or Ketu and get to the bottom of the working nature of such combination, in order to properly assess whether such combination is destructive or constructive.
