Nadi Dosh is undoubtedly the most feared Dosh among all defects which are formed during the process of Gun Milan, practiced for the purpose of horoscope matching for two individuals. Many types of bad results are associated with Nadi Dosh and this Dosh is said to cause even the death of one or both the partners who marry each other despite the presence of Nadi Dosh in match making. Due to so much fear attached to this Dosh, many people do not proceed with marriages, if Nadi Dosh is formed during horoscope matching through Gun Milan. Let’s look at the formation of Nadi Dosh, malefic results associated with Nadi Dosh and the actual relevance of this defect in the system of Gun Milan as well as in the process of horoscope matching. We will also discuss whether Nadi Dosh is actually capable of causing the kind of serious problems associated with it or the problems associated with Nadi Dosh have simply been exaggerated.
To start with the topic, let’s first understand as to what Nadi Dosh is and how this Dosh is formed during the process of match making. In order to do so, let’s first understand as to what a Nadi is according to according to Vedic astrology. As we know that all nine planets called navagraha in Vedic astrology are always on their journey from one sign to the other and from one nakshatra to the other. Accordingly Moon also travels from Ashwini nakshatra to Revati nakshatra and from Aries to Pisces in a cyclic movement; and at any given point of time and place; Moon is present in a particular nakshatra and in a particular sign. For example, let’s assume that Moon is present in Rohini nakshatra and in Taurus sign at this time and place. Accordingly, all the people born under this time and place will have the Moon placed in Rohini nakshatra and in Taurus sign in their birth horoscopes. Hence the birth nakshatra of these natives is Rohini and the birth sign or Raashi of these natives is Taurus.
Moving ahead, Vedic astrology assigns one out of 3 Nadis to each one of the 27 nakshatras which are considered important in Vedic astrology. These Nadis are called Adi Nadi, Madhya Nadi and Antya Nadi according to Vedic astrology. Adi means beginning, Madhya means middle and Antya means end. All 27 nakshatras are equally divided among these 3 Nadis, which means that every Nadi claims 9 nakshatras. Hence 9 nakshatras are associated with Adi Nadi, 9 nakshatras are associated with Madhya Nadi and 9 nakshatras are associated with Antya Nadi. At the time of birth of each native, the placement of Moon in his birth chart is observed and depending on the nakshatra in which Moon is placed, a Nadi is assigned to the person. Following is the distribution of Nadis according to Vedic astrology as decided by the presence of Moon in specific nakshatras in the birth charts of different natives:
If Moon is placed in any of these 9 nakshatras named Ashwini, Ardra, Punarvasu, UttaraPhalguni, Hasta, Jyeshtha, Moola, Shatabhisha or Poorvabhadrapada in a horoscope, the native is said to have Adi Nadi.
If Moon is placed in any of these 9 nakshatras named Bharani, Mrigasira, Pushya, PoorvaPhalguni, Chitra, Anuradha, Poorvashada, Dhanishtha or UttaraBhadrapada in a horoscope, the native is said to have Madhya Nadi.
If Moon is placed in any of these nakshatras named Krittika, Rohini, Ashlesha, Magha, Swati, Vishakha, Uttarashada, Shravana or Revati in a horoscope, the native is said to have Antya Nadi.
As we know what Nadi is and how the Nadi of a person is decided from his horoscope, let’s look at the formation of Nadi Dosh which is formed during horoscope matching through the process of Gun Milan. In the process of Gun Milan, the Nadi of both girl and boy is found out from their horoscopes according to the classifications given above. It is then checked as to whether both boy and girl have same Nadi or different Nadis. If both boy and girl have different Nadis then it is considered good for marriage but if boy and girl have same Nadi, Nadi Dosh is said to be formed in horoscope matching, which is said to cause serious types of problems in marriage.
For example, if the boy has Adi Nadi and the girl has Madhya Nadi or Antya Nadi, the Nadi match is said to be fine and 8 out of 8 points or Gunas are assigned for Nadi match. However, if the girl also has Adi Nadi like the boy, Nadi Dosh is said to be formed and 0 out of 8 points or Gunas is assigned for this Nadi match. It should be noted that the system of Gun Milan is based on matching 8 aspects or koots from both the horoscopes, which are called Varna, Vashya, Tara, Yoni, Graha, Gan, Bhakut and Nadi. All these 8 koots are assigned 1 to 8 points or Gunas respectively, which makes a total of 36 and a final score is calculated for horoscope matching for two natives, based on how good or bad is the matching of each one of these 8 koots.
Since Nadi lies at the top of this pyramid of Gunas and it stands 8th from the bottom, 8 Gunas are assigned to Nadi Match. It should be noted that unlike many other koots where any percentage of Gunas may be assigned according to matching of these koots on different levels, Nadi and Bhakoot koot are either 0% or 100%. It means that for the koot of Bhakoot which carries 7 points, either 7 will be assigned or 0 will be assigned. Similarly in case of the koot of Nadi, either 8 points will be assigned or 0 point will be assigned and there is nothing in between like 5 points or 6 points. Hence the presence of same Nadi for both the natives during the process of horoscope matching deducts 8 points straight away; and Nadi Dosh is said to be formed in such match making.
Since Nadi carries 8 points out of a total of 36 points, the formation of Nadi Dosh is considered as a big disadvantage for the overall score as it deducts almost 25% of the total points straight away. Nadi Dosh is associated with various types of problems depending on which kind of Nadi Dosh is formed during horoscope matching.
According to Vedic astrology, 3 types of Nadi Doshas can be formed during horoscope matching, depending on the kind of Nadi associated with bride and groom. For example, if both boy and girl have Adi Nadi according to their horoscopes, Adi Nadi Dosh is said to be formed in horoscope matching, which is said to cause disturbances in marriage, a long separation or a divorce. If both boy and girl have Madhya Nadi according to their horoscopes, Madhya Nadi Dosh is said to be formed in horoscope matching, which is said to cause divorce or death of one of the partners. If both boy and girl have Antya Nadi according to their horoscopes, Antya Nadi Dosh is said to be formed in horoscope matching and this type of Nadi Dosh is considered as the most troublesome among all three kinds of Nadi Doshas.
Antya Nadi Dosh is said to cause death of one or both the partners if the natives having this type of Nadi Dosh decide to marry each other. For this reason, the formation of Nadi Dosh in horoscope matching is considered very bad and many people do not proceed with marriage when Nadi Dosh is formed in horoscope matching, particularly if it is Antya Nadi Dosh. The system of Gun Milan also describes some conditions which serve as exceptions for Nadi Dosh, which means if any of these conditions is met during Gun Milan, Nadi Dosh is said to be cancelled or nullified and horoscope matching is said to be free from this defect. These conditions are mentioned below:
If both male and female are born in the same Nakshatra but the Charana or Pada of Nakshatra is different, Nadi Dosh is said to be nullified in horoscope matching, despite both of them having the same Nadi. It should be noted that each one of 27 nakshatras has 4 quarters called padas or charanas in Vedic astrology. Hence if both boy and girl have their Moon placed in the nakshatra of Ashwini, they both have Adi Nadi but Nadi Dosh is said to be cancelled if Moon is placed in different padas of Ashwini nakshatra in both these horoscopes. For example, if the boy has his Moon placed in the first pada of Ashwini nakshatra and the girl has her Moon placed in any one of the other three padas of Ashwini nakshatra, Nadi Dosh is said to be cancelled, though both of them have Adi Nadi. However, if Moon is placed in the same pada of Ashwini nakshatra in both these horoscopes, let’s say in first pada; Nadi Dosh is not cancelled.
If both Male and Female have same Moon Sign but the birth Nakshatras are different and both of them have same Nadi, Nadi Dosh is said to be nullified in horoscope matching. For example, if the boy has his Moon placed in Ardra Nakshatra and the girl has her Moon placed in any one of the first three padas of Punarvasu nakshatra, which fall in the sign of Gemini, this rule applies. In this case, both of them have Adi Nadi and both of them have Gemini as their Moon sign. Hence they have same Nadi and same Moon sign, but birth nakshatras are different. Hence Nadi Dosh is cancelled in this case. However, if the girl has her Moon placed in the fourth pada of Punarvasu nakshatra, which falls in the sign of Cancer, this rule doesn’t apply then, as both of them have different Moon signs now, with the boy having his Moon sign as Gemini and the girl having her Moon sign as Cancer.
If both Male and Female have same birth Nakshatra but the Moon Signs are different, Nadi Dosh is said to be nullified in horoscope matching despite both of them having the same Nadi. For example, if the boy has his Moon placed in any one of the first three padas of Punarvasu nakshatra and the girl has her Moon placed in the fourth pada of Punarvasu nakshatra, this rule applies. Both of them have their birth Nakshatra as Punarvasu and their Nadi as Adi Nadi. Moving ahead, the Moon sign of the boy is Gemini and that of the girl is Cancer. Hence Nadi Dosh is cancelled in this case. However, if Moon is placed in the first three padas of Punarvasu nakshatra in the horoscopes of both these natives, this rule doesn’t apply, as both of them will have Adi Nadi and the same Moon sign which is Gemini.
Knowing this much about Nadi Dosh, let’s now try to analyze Nadi Dosh with the help of scientific facts and statistics and let’s see if Nadi Dosh is actually capable of causing the kind of damage in horoscope matching, which is attributed to it. As we know that every person is supposed to have one out of three Nadis, this means that for a given person, Nadi Dosh on average will be formed during his horoscope matching with every third person. This is because every third person on average will have the same Nadi as he has. It means that he can’t marry one third people on average, merely because of Nadi Dosh.
For example, if a boy has Adi Nadi according to his horoscope, every third girl he considers for horoscope matching should also be having Adi Nadi as there are only three Nadis according to Vedic astrology; and the chances of someone belonging to a particular Nadi are one third, as all 27 nakshatras have been equally divided into 3 groups of Nadis, assigning 9 out of 27 nakshatras to each Nadi. Going by this theory, every third girl on average is prohibited for a boy and every third boy on average is prohibited for a girl, merely on the basis of Nadi Dosh as this defect will be formed in every third case of horoscope matching.
It should be noted that Nadi Dosh is only one of the defects formed during match making and there are many other defects like Manglik Dosh, Kaal Sarp Dosh, Pitra Dosh, Bhakut Dosh, Gan Dosh, Graha Maitri Dosh, Yoni Dosh and other defects, each of which is capable of causing serious problems in 40 to 50% of the marriages; according to the prevalent definitions of these defects. Taking everything into consideration, it can be easily said that almost all the marriages in the world should end up in divorces or other serious problems. This is not what we see in reality and hence the formation of Nadi Dosh in match making alone can’t cause serious problems in the marriages of the couples having this Dosh.
In my experience of horoscope matching which now goes over thousands of cases of match making, I have witnessed hundreds of successful marriages despite the presence of Nadi Dosh in match making. This happened due to fact that the overall horoscopes of these couples were giving very good indications about the marriages of these couples as the positive factors present in these horoscopes reduced the malefic effects of Nadi Dosh to great extent. Hence Nadi Dosh could not cause any significant damage in these marriages.
Hence it should be kept in mind that the formation of Nadi Dosh during horoscope matching can cause significant problems in the marriage of a couple under consideration, only if such Nadi Dosh is supported by some other malefic defects present in one or both the horoscopes. Nadi Dosh is not capable of causing serious damages in the marriage of a couple on its own, in most cases. It should also be noted that the presence of good yogas in one or both the horoscopes can reduce the bad effects of Nadi Dosh to great extents and accordingly, this defect may not cause any significant damage in such a marriage.
Therefore, the couples having Nadi Dosh during match making should not lose heart and they should get their horoscopes matched properly in order to know whether such Nadi Dosh is capable of causing significant damage or not. It should also be noted that the malefic effects of Nadi Dosh can be rectified with astrological remedies like Poojas, Yantras and donations in most cases, which gives us one more reason for not being afraid of Nadi Dosh.
