Uttaraphalguni is taken as the twelfth nakshatra among the 27 nakshatras which are considered important in Indian Jyotish for making astrological calculations from horoscopes based on vedic astrology. Uttaraphalguni forms a pair with the previous nakshatra Purvaphalguni and thus many characteristics and qualities of this nakshatra are similar to the characteristics and qualities exhibited by the previous nakshatra Purvaphalguni, according to the prevalent beliefs of vedic astrology. The literal meaning of the word Uttaraphalguni according to vedic jyotish is The Latter Reddish or Red One and as we have already discussed a similar meaning for the previous nakshatra, so it can be said that this nakshatra also possesses some qualities which are similar to its previous nakshatra. Indian Jyotish considers the symbol of this nakshatra as two back legs of a Divan or a couch used for daytime relaxation and accordingly this nakshatra is also associated with relaxation like the previous nakshatra. But it should be noted here that the stage of relaxation represented by this nakshatra is a later and lighter form of relaxation which is conveyed by using the two back legs of a couch as its symbol. Many vedic astrologers believe that the symbol of two front legs of the couch used for Purvaphalguni nakshatra represents the first stage of relaxation when a person is in real need of rest and renewal of energy and accordingly he goes into deeper stage of relaxation like a short sleep during the daytime whereas the symbol of two back legs of a couch used for Uttaraphalguni represents the later stage of relaxation when the same person has waken from the sleep and is just lying on the couch for some extended relaxation which is not a must needed relaxation like in case of the previous nakshatra and this second stage of relaxation represents will of the person for some extended relaxation more than the actual need for rest and relaxation.

Some vedic astrologers believe that the second stage of relaxation represented by the symbol of this nakshatra means that the person is just taking physical relaxation by lying around and he has finished his mental relaxation by waking from the sleep which is a deep relaxation meant to relax the mind. So this nakhatra can be related to the phase of relaxation when the person has renewed his energy and is much more active on mental level and accordingly may be engaged in some activities like thinking about something or making some plans about some coming activities or plans, talking to someone or watch something like a movie etc. So it can be said that this nakshatra marks the ending phase of relaxation and the native is just getting ready for some activity. Vedic astrology considers Aryaman who is again one of the twelve Adityas or Solar Deities, as the ruling deity of this nakshatra. Aryaman represents qualities like kindness, helping others and getting benefitted from others by gaining their favours or help, hospitality, civilized nature and other likewise qualities and many of these qualities of Aryaman are relayed through this nakshatra. Aryaman is also known as a deity who is very keen on making friends and who assigns great value to his friends and friendship and accordingly this quality of Aryaman is also exhibited through Uttaraphalguni.

Vedic astrology assigns Sun as the ruling planet of this nakshatra and therefore many qualities of Sun are also relayed through this nakshatra. The first part of Uttaraphalguni falls in the sign of Leo ruled by the Sun whereas the last three parts of this nakshatra fall in the sign of Virgo ruled by Mercury and therefore the influence of Mercury is also added to this nakshatra and accordingly many qualities of Mercury find release through this nakshatra. The combined effect of the influence of Sun and Mercury on this nakshatra make it a very special nakshatra as Sun and Mercury are known to work very well in the company of each other according to prevalent beliefs of Vedic astrology. The combination of Sun and Mercury in a horoscope is considered to form a very auspicious yoga called BudhAditya yoga according to many vedic astrologers and the qualities like sharp intellect, intelligence, the ability to strike a balance between what the soul wants and the practical reality, associated with this yoga find expression through this nakshatra. The combined influence of Sun and Mercury blesses this nakshatra with some of the best qualities exhibited by this nakshatra and it should be noted here that since the ruling deity of this nakshatra, Aryaman is also a solar deity, so he also possesses many qualities of the Sun and thus the influence of the ruling deity of this nakshatra also works in harmony with the influence of Sun and Mercury on this nakshatra which makes this nakshatra much more balanced in its approach than the previous nakshatra Purvaphalguni which works under the influence of two opposite energies and as a result Purvaphalguni is at times volatile and unstable.

Combining all the influences that this nakshatra has on it, the natives under the strong influence of this nakshatra are usually good at socializing with other people, making friends and valuing their friends and friendship, being kind hearted, intelligent and practical at the same time. Such natives are helpful to the people around them and they also gain favours from such people from time to time. Most of the natives under the strong influence of this nakshatra are very independent in nature and they do not like to blindly follow the trends set by the others and on the other hand, they are the ones who believe in setting their own trends, primarily due to the strong influence of Sun on this nakshatra. Sun is considered as the king among the nine planets called navagraha which are taken into account for making calculations based on vedic astrology and Sun is also considered to be the most independent planet among the navagraha and since this nakshatra is under the strong influence of Sun, so it also exhibits this quality of independence. It is interesting to note here that the natives under the strong influence of Purvaphalguni believe in following the trends rather than setting the trends due to the strong influence of Venus on Purvaphalguni whereas the natives under the strong influence of Uttaraphalguni believe in setting their own trends rather than following the trends set by the others, due to the strong influence of Sun on this nakshatra. So there is a clear contrast between these two seemingly similar nakshatras when it comes to the expression of the self due to the fact that these two nakshatras work under the influence of two opposite kinds of energies.

According to some vedic astrologers practicing in Indian jyotish, the qualities of Sun like aggression, anger, the urge to win and conquer and other likewise qualities are also relayed through this nakshatra. But this nakshatra gives softer expressions of solar energy compared to the expressions given by Krittika nakshatra and as a result the natives under the strong influence of this nakshatra are likely to use aggression and anger only when it is much needed and they are also likely to calm down easily compared to Krittika type natives. The influence of Mercury brings qualities like good communication skills, humor, analytical and practical nature, intelligence and other likewise qualities to this nakshatra and accordingly the natives under the influence of this nakshatra exhibit these qualities of Mercury which can make them attain success and good results in the fields where these qualities are valued. Uttaraphalguni natives are courageous like the Sun and skillful like Mercury and accordingly they can succeed in many spheres of their lives. The negative influence of this nakshatra in a horoscope can make the native arrogant, selfish, self-centered and willing to make arguments and disputes on most of the issues.

Vedic astrology associates many different kinds of professions with this nakshatra and accordingly the natives under the influence of this nakshatra can be seen in various professional spheres practicing as people working with governments and holding positions of power and authority, politicians, diplomats, manipulators, judges, magistrates and other likewise people who are in a position of authority and use their judgmental abilities and analytical skills in their professions, astrologers, priests and heads of some specific organizations, musicians, actors and other people associated with the entertainment industry, teachers and preachers, people working with banks or other similar kinds of financial organizations and some other kinds of people practicing in some other kinds of professions. The negative influence of this nakshatra in a horoscope can also make the native engage in practices like being a top smuggler, most wanted criminal, mafia don, leader of some terrorist organization and other likewise practices.

Discussing some of the other facts associated with this nakshatra which are considered important in vedic astrology for making certain specific calculations like gun Milan for the purpose of horoscope matching for marriage, Vedic astrology considers Uttaraphalguni as a Female nakshatra which is a very surprising classification given to this nakshatra by the ancient vedic astrologers as its ruling deity and ruling planet are both Males and most of the qualities possessed by this nakshatra are the qualities possessed by males. And though some astrologers try to explain this classification on the basis of association of this nakshatra with Mercury and the sign Virgo which is a female sign, but so far no convincing explanation is available for this gender classification of Uttaraphalguni. Indian Jyotish considers this nakshatra as quick in nature and balanced in functioning and both of these classifications can be attributed to the likewise influence of Sun on this nakshatra. Kshatriya Varna is assigned to Uttaraphalguni and Rajasic is the Gun assigned to this nakshatra according to Indian Jyotish and both of these classifications again make sense considering the qualities exhibited by this nakshatra and the influence of Sun on this nakshatra. Vedic astrology assigns Manav Gan to this nakshatra and this can again be understood based on the fact that natives under the influence of this nakshatra are very much engaged in earthly and materialistic affairs. The element of Fire is assigned to this nakshatra which makes it much more active than its previous nakshatra Purvaphalguni which has water as its element.
