This is a well known fact now that gemstones are very fast at producing results whether positive or negative. It is true that in most cases, a gemstone representing a planet among navagraha is not likely to sit quietly on the finger of the wearer for a long period of time. It means that such gemstone may either bring positive effects or it may bring negative effects and something good or bad is likely to happen in most such cases where a native wears a gemstone belonging to a planet among navagraha.
For this reason, the use of gemstones is a practice which should be carried out with utmost care and under the supervision of an expert astrologer who knows exactly which gemstones are going to suit you according to your horoscope and what weights of those gemstones are going to suit you. However, some astrologers don’t have proper knowledge on the subject and they recommend gemstones to their clients merely on the basis of some preconceived notions. These astrologers don’t go through all the complex calculations to find out the working nature of all the planets in your horoscope and they may simply depend on one or two factors in order to recommend gemstones for you.
These astrologers may engage in practices like suggesting a gemstone for the lord of Sun sign of a native, suggesting a gemstone for the lord of Moon sign or birth Raashi or a native, suggesting a gemstone for the lord of birth nakshatra of a native, suggesting a gemstone for the lord of running planetary period or Mahadasha, suggesting a gemstone for the lord of ascendant or for the lord of some other specific houses of a horoscope and some other such practices; where they may recommend gemstones based on one or two factors.
As already explained by me in a previous chapter, the working nature of a planet and the overall theme of a horoscope are the most important factors which should be considered duly; before recommending gemstones. Since these theories ignore these factors of utmost importance, most of these theories and beliefs have given birth to misconceptions in gemstone astrology and they have become the causes of losses to many natives interested in astrology. In this chapter, we will discuss the theory of recommending gemstones on the basis of birth nakshatra of a native and will find out the astrological as well as the logical truth behind this theory.
Many astrologers and particularly the astrologers practicing in Indian astrology believe that Moon is the most important planet in a horoscope and birth nakshatra of a person is sufficient in itself to tell most of the things about a native. Before we move ahead with the discussion, let’s get to know what the birth nakshatra of a person is, for the sake of convenience of the readers who don’t know what birth nakshatra is.
There are 12 signs in astrology which are counted from Aries to Pisces and each one of the planets is placed in one out of these 12 signs or the others, at any given time. Each planet among navagraha is continuously moving and it travels from Aries to Pisces in a cyclic movement. There are 27 nakshatras in Vedic astrology which lie within these 27 signs in such a way that the first nakshatra Ashwini starts with the starting of the first sign Aries and the last nakshatra Revati ends with the ending of the last sign Pisces.
Moon spends somewhat more than a day in each nakshatra on average and this way, it travels through these 27 nakshatras as well as through 12 signs in about a month and it then repeats the process. The same happens with all other planets and based on their speeds of motion, they keep traveling through these 12 signs and 27 nakshatras in a cyclic way. Hence at any given point in time, each planet is traveling through or placed in one of these 27 nakshatras.
The nakshatra, in which Moon is present in the birth chart or birth horoscope of a native, is called the birth nakshatra of the native. For example, if Moon is present in the nakshatra of Mrigashira in the birth chart of a native, the birth nakshatra of the native will be Mrigashira and Mars being the ruler of the nakshatra Mrigashira will be the lord of birth nakshatra of the native. In simple language, Moon was traveling through the nakshatra of Mrigashira at the time of birth of this native and hence Mrigashira becomes the birth nakshatra of this native. Since the nakshatra of Mrigashira is ruled by Mars, it becomes the lord of the birth nakshatra for this native.
It should be noted that all 27 nakshatras are ruled by navagraha and their lordships are divided equally among these nine planets. It means each one of these nine planets rules 3 nakshatras among these 27 nakshatras. These 27 nakshatras are further subdivided in three groups of 9 nakshatras each. Looking at the first group of first to ninth nakshatra, the first nakshatra Ashwini is ruled by Ketu, second nakshatra Bharani is ruled by Venus, third nakshatra Krittika is ruled by Sun, fourth nakshatra Rohini is ruled by Moon, fifth nakshatra Mrigashira is ruled by Mars, sixth nakshatra Ardra is ruled by Rahu, seventh nakshatra Punarvasu is ruled by Jupiter, eighth nakshatra Pushya is ruled by Saturn and the ninth nakshatra Ashlesha is ruled by Mercury.
This process repeats itself for the next two groups of nakshatras in a way that 10th and 19th nakshatras called Magha and Moola respectively are ruled by Ketu, 18th and 27th nakshatras called Jyeshtha and Revati respectively are ruled by Mercury and all other nakshatras falling between these nakshatras are ruled by other planets; just as they are ruled by them in the first series of nakshatras ranging from 1 to 9.
Moving ahead, a group of astrologers believes that the gemstone which belongs to the lord of birth nakshatra of a native is always suitable for that native. Hence these astrologers recommend their clients to wear gemstones belonging to the lords of birth nakshatras in their respective horoscopes. However in actual practice, such gemstones prescribed for the lords of birth nakshatras can give positive results to some natives whereas such gemstones can give bad or very bad results to some other natives, depending on the working nature of such lords of birth nakshatras as well as on the overall horoscopes of these natives.
I’ve been told by many of my clients that they have suffered on account of serious problems in various spheres of their lives after wearing gemstones for the lords of birth nakshatras in their horoscopes. Some of these natives faced financial losses, some of them faced serious problems with their husbands or wives, some of them had to suffer injuries through accidents and some of them had to face bad name on account of false accusations after wearing such gemstones. As the number of people suffering from bad effects after wearing the gemstones for the lords of birth nakshatras is significantly high, it clearly suggests that this theory and belief of recommending and wearing gemstones on the basis of birth nakshatras is flawed and it is not an accurate theory.
Looking at some scientific and astrological facts related to this theory, each planet among navagraha continuously keeps moving from one nakshatra to the next nakshatra in a cyclic movement which is from Ashwini to Revati except Rahu and Ketu which move in a retrograde motion from Revati to Ashwini. This way, each planet is placed in one nakshatra or the other at any given point of time and each planet has an approximate time period in which this planet travels through a nakshatra completely, which means that a planet enters and leaves such nakshatra during this period.
This time period of transit in a nakshatra is different for different planets and in case of Moon, it takes about one day for Moon to travel through a nakshatra and this time period is known as the transit of the Moon in a particular nakshatra. As Moon remains present in a nakshatra for about one day, this means that the birth nakshatra of all the people born during this one day will be the same. It further means that the lord of birth nakshatra will also be the same for all the people born during this day. Hence this theory states that hundreds of thousands of people born during a particular period of one day can wear the same gemstone which belongs to the lord of birth nakshatra in their horoscopes, which is same for all such natives.
It should be noted that the basic and most important rule for wearing any particular gemstone is that the planet for which a gemstone is being worn, should be working positively in the horoscope of the native, which means that such planet should be a benefic planet for the native. Combining the results of this rule with the results of the above mentioned theory of wearing gemstones on the basis of birth nakshatras, this conclusion can be easily derived that the lord of birth nakshatra in a horoscope is always benefic for the native. This is because the gemstone for this planet is believed to be always suitable for the native and only the gemstones belonging to benefic planets are suitable for a native.
This means that a particular planet continues to be benefic for all the natives born during a period of specific one day as all hundreds of thousands of natives born during this one day will have the same birth nakshatra and hence the same lord of birth nakshatra. For example, if Moon enters Mrigashira on a day and it leaves Mrigashira after about one day, it means that the birth nakshatra of all the natives born during this period will be Mrigashira and Mars being the planetary lord of the Mrigashira will be benefic for all the natives born during the above mentioned period of one day. This is far away from the truth as no planet can continue to be benefic for all the natives even for a few hours, let alone a period of one day.
The working nature of all planets continuously keeps changing from benefic to malefic and from malefic to benefic; and a planet can completely change from benefic to malefic or from malefic to benefic in a matter of 30 to 60 minutes. It means that a planet can’t keep being benefic for all the natives born during a period of one day as it can change its nature dozens of times during this period of one day. All the planets keep changing their strength, working nature, level of activity and many other aspects related to them with every passing minute. This is what makes them behave differently with every passing minute and accordingly all the individuals are different from each other as there is a continuous change in the horoscopes due to continuous change in the characteristics of various planets.
Therefore in the present example, when Moon is placed in the nakshatra of Mrigashira, Mars can be positive, negative or mixed; depending on the factors which decide its working nature in a horoscope. Hence it may be the case that Mars is negative in a horoscope and the astrologer may recommend you the gemstone for Mars; merely because Moon is placed in Mrigashira.
As soon as you start wearing the gemstone for this planet; such negative Mars may gain strength and you may start suffering with higher or much higher intensity. Similarly, many other such cases may be there when the planetary lord of the birth nakshatra may be negative or it may even be involved in the formation of a defect in the horoscope. Wearing the gemstone for such planetary lord of birth nakshatra in such cases may produce very bad or even disastrous results.
It should be noted that the basis of this theory of recommending gemstones on the basis of birth nakshatras lies in the fact that the placement of Moon in a nakshatra always makes the lord of that nakshatra positive. Analyzing this statement, no single planet can decide the working nature of another planet in a horoscope and sometimes it may not even decide its own working nature. The working nature of each and every planet is decided by a number of factors; some of which have been mentioned in a previous chapter. Hence this belief that the placement of Moon in a nakshatra always makes the lord of that nakshatra positive is flawed.
Therefore, the theory of recommending and wearing gemstones on the basis of birth nakshatras is flawed and accordingly the practice of recommending and wearing gemstones on the basis of this theory should be avoided as such types of misconceptions can cause serious problems for some natives. The primary and the most important rule for wearing gemstones is that the planet related to the gemstone worn by a native should be benefic in his horoscope. In other words, gemstones should always be worn for benefic planets and they should never be worn for malefic planets.
Vedic astrology lays many guidelines for deciding the benefic or malefic nature of a planet in a horoscope, some of which have been mentioned in a previous chapter. Accordingly, a good astrologer should analyze the horoscope of his client with due attention in order to decide which planets are benefic for the native and then the gemstones for such planets should only be recommended.
