Pitra Paksha is coming ahead and increasing number of people are taking interest in getting Pitra Dosh nivaran pooja performed as well as getting some other remedies performed in order to rectify Pitra Dosh present in their horoscopes. However it should be noted that getting Pitra Dosh nivaran pooja performed is prohibited during the days of Pitra Paksha. This may cause confusion in the minds of some readers because so far they may have been told by many astrologers and pandits that Pitra Paksha is the best time to get Pitra Dosh nivaran pooja performed.

These readers may think as to why not these pooja should be performed during the days of Pitra Paksha and if this is not the pooja meant for this time, which pooja should be performed during the days of Pitra Paksha? The pooja which is allowed and which should be performed during Pitra Paksha is Pitra Kalyaan pooja or Pitra Gayatri pooja and not Pitra Dosh nivaran pooja. Through this chapter, we will discuss the difference between Pitra Dosh nivaran pooja and Pitra Kalyaan pooja.

Let’s first have a brief look at the concept of Pitra Dosh which says that Pitra Dosh is formed in a horoscope if Sun or the ninth house of a horoscope is afflicted by one or more than one malefic planet in the horoscope. Many astrologers and pandits state that Pitra Dosh is formed in a horoscope because the native has not performed the after death rituals of his ancestors like father and grandfather, due to which such ancestors are cursing the native and that curse is reflecting as Pitra Dosh in the horoscope of the native. This theory is far away from the truth as Pitra Dosh is formed in the birth horoscope of a native and any good or bad karma done by the native after his birth can’t reflect in his present life’s horoscope. It means that the formation of Pitra Dosh in a horoscope has something to do prior to his birth which means that it has something to do with the bad karmas done in his past lives.

Pitra Dosh in reality is not the curse of the ancestors of a native but it is formed in a horoscope due to bad karmas done by the ancestors of the native. The native has to inherit those bad karmas just like he inherits many other things from his ancestors like his physical shape, intelligence, mental abilities, specific characteristics, money, wealth, debts and many other things. Hence the native also has to inherit and pay for the bad karmas done by his ancestors and such bad karmas reflect as Pitra Dosh in the horoscope of the native. Therefore Pitra Dosh is not a curse of the ancestors but it is formed in a horoscope due to the bad karmas done by the ancestors of the native. It means that the ancestors of the native are themselves cursed and that curse has extended to the family line of those ancestors and the native being a part of that family line has also inherited such Pitra Dosh from his ancestors.

Knowing what Pitra Dosh is, the next step should be finding the remedies for Pitra Dosh, which may include certain specific types of charities, poojas and many other things. Coming to the pooja performed for nivaran of Pitra Dosh, this pooja is different for different natives. The malefic planet or planets forming Pitra Dosh in the horoscope of the native are first detected and then this pooja is performed for such planets in order to pacify these planets and reduce the strength of Pitra Dosh.

Moving on to another concept which is called Pitra Kalyaan, sometimes the ancestors of a native do not receive proper after death rituals; or no after death rituals are performed in some cases. Due to this, sometimes these ancestors find it difficult to move on to their relevant lokas after death and they remain in a state of transit; waiting for some specific good karmas to be performed on their behalves so that they may move to their relevant lokas. In some cases, such ancestors may contact the natives through dreams or through some other medium in order to let them know that they are not in a good state and something needs to be done by the natives in order to relieve them from their present state of misery or uncertainty. This is where Pitra Kalyaan pooja is performed with some other remedies so that the ancestors may get benefitted from these remedies and they may move on to their relevant lokas.

Pitra Kalyaan pooja is performed with the help of Shri Pitra Gayatri mantra and a chant of 125,000 Pitra Gayatri mantras is raised by expert pandits on behalf of the native along with charities, Havna etc. All the good results are dedicated to the ancestors so that they may get relieved from their present state of misery. Coming to the best suitable time for getting Pitra Kalyaan pooja performed, Pitra Paksha is the time of year which comes for about 15 days every year and it has been assigned to the ancestors or Pitras. That is why it is called Pitra Paksha which means ‘The Days of the Ancestors’.

All other types of poojas are prohibited during these days including pooja for any planet among navagraha, pooja for any nakshatra among 27 nakshatras and poojas for gods and goddesses as these days belong to the ancestors and the only poojas which should be performed here are the ones which are directly related to the well being of Pitras or ancestors. Since Pitra Dosh nivaran pooja is performed with the Veda mantra of a specific planet which is forming Pitra Dosh in a horoscope, this pooja also becomes prohibited during the days of Pitra Paksha and hence Pitra Dosh nivaran pooja should not be performed during Pitra Paksha.

The basic difference between Pitra Dosh nivaran pooja and Pitra Kalyaan pooja is that the first one is performed in order to rectify Pitra Dosh present in a horoscope so that the native may see relief from the malefic effects of this defect, which means that this pooja is performed for the benefit of the native. However, the second pooja i.e. Pitra Kalyaan pooja is performed for the welfare and benefit of native’s ancestors and not for the benefit of the native. Hence there is a clear difference between these two poojas as one of them is performed to bring benefits to the native whereas the other one is performed to pass on good karmas and specific benefits to native’s ancestors or Pitras. Since any kind of pooja which is performed for anyone’s own benefit with the chant of Veda mantras of a planet, nakshatra, god or goddess is prohibited during the days of Pitra Paksha, hence Pitra Dosh nivaran pooja should not be performed during these days and Pitra Kalyaan pooja should instead be performed, which is directly related to the benefit of the ancestors or Pitras.

It should be noted that all the other kinds of rituals like doing Shraadh karmas for the ancestors, which means offering food and money to pandits, donating specific fruits, provisions, money and other things in temples or to some pandits in the name of the ancestors and many other kinds of rituals; are all performed during the days of Pitra Paksha in order to pass benefits to the ancestors, since these are the days of the ancestors. Anything done for them during these days is likely to be passed on to them much faster than the other days of the years and this is the reason why it is recommended doing such rituals during the days of Pitra Paksha.

Therefore, only those rituals are recommended during the days of Pitra Paksha, which are performed to pass on benefic results to the ancestors. This is the reason why Pitra Kalyaan pooja or Pitra Gayatri pooja should also be performed during these days as Pitra Gayatri pooja is certainly one of the most potent remedies to pass benefits to the ancestors and this pooja alone is capable of relieving the ancestors from their state of misery to a great extent. Pitra Dosh nivaran pooja on the other hand, is the one which is done for the benefit of the native and it generally does not offer much for the benefit of the ancestors, hence this pooja should not be performed during the days of Pitra Paksha. Therefore Pitra Dosh nivaran pooja should not be performed during Pitra Paksha and instead; Pitra Gayatri pooja should be performed during these days as this is the most suitable and appropriate pooja for these days.
