Gandmool dosh is a defect which is formed due to presence of Moon in some specific parts of some specific nakshatras namely Ashwini, Ashlesha, Magha, Jyeshtha, Moola and Revati nakshatra in the birth horoscope of a native and the presence of this dosh in a horoscope can trouble the native with various kinds of problems in various spheres of his life depending upon the placement and strength of this dosh in the horoscope of the native. A Gandmool dosh nivaran puja is performed in order to rectify this dosh and the process and procedure is much more technical than any other kind of pooja performed for any other kind of dosh present in a horoscope and that is why this pooja needs much more resources and expertise to be conducted properly. Some astrologers believe that going to Trayambakeshwar temple in of Lord Shiva in nasik or going to Ujjain, Haridwar, Gayaji or Badrinath dham and doing some simple procedures there will rectify this Gandmool dosh which is not the case and a duly conducted pooja needs to be performed for nivaran of this dosh. Many of my clients and readers have asked me about the procedure for pooja again and again and many of them have requested me to write an article on this topic and hence today we will discuss this issue and we will see as to what kind of pooja should actually be performed in order to rectify Gandmool Dosh present in a horoscope and how should this pooja be performed.

Starting the discussion, the puja which is performed to rectify the malefic effects of Gandmool Dosh formed in a horoscope is not a single fixed puja and Gandmool Dosh nivaran puja can be different for different natives. In order to find as to what kind of puja should be performed for niavaran of Gandmool Dosh in a horoscope, it should first be checked from the horoscope as to which nakshatra is forming Gandmool Dosh in the horoscope and once that nakshatra is detected then a Gandmool Dosh nivaran pooja should be performed for that nakshatra in order to rectify Gandmool Dosh present in the horoscope or in order to reduce the strength of such Gandmool Dosh present in the horoscope. This is the most important step which should be properly conducted before performing a Gandmool Dosh nivaran puja because not knowing the exact cause of Gandmool Dosh in a horoscope will simply lead to some kind of puja which is not meant to rectify such Gandmool Dosh and accordingly such pooja will not help much or help at all. We already know that Gandmool dosh is formed in a horoscope due to presence of Moon in any one of the 6 nakshatras named Ashwini, Ashlesha, Magha, Jyeshtha, Moola and Revati, hence we will first need to check as in which of these 6 nakshatras, Moon is placed in a horoscope which is called the birth nakshatra of the native and then a Gandmool dosh nivaran pooja is performed for that nakshatra. Each nakshatra has its own Ved mantra and the mantra for birth nakshatra of the native becomes Gandmool dosh nivaran mantra for the native. For example, let us consider for the sake of this article that a native is born with Gandmool dosh which has been formed due to presence of Moon in Ashlesha nakshatra in his horoscope, hence the Veda mantra for Ashlesha mantra becomes the Gandmool dosh nivaran mantra in this case and similarly other mantras for other nakshatras will be used in different cases. So for the sake of this article, the Veda mantra of Ashlesha nakshatra is the Gandmool dosh nivaran mantra.

Once we know the birth nakshatra of the native and Gandmool dosh nivaran mantra for that nakshatra, the next step is to find the proper day for this pooja which is again a tricky job because Gandmool dosh pooja can be completed only once every month on average due to the fact that Gandmool dosh nivaran pooja is started in such a way that the chant of nivaran mantra completes on the day when Moon is again present in the birth nakshatra of the native which is Ashlesha nakshatra in this case. Since Moon visits every nakshatra once a month on average, therefore this pooja can be completed only once every month when Moon visits the birth nakshatra of the native and accordingly the day of start of this pooja is chosen which may be 5 to 10 days prior to the day of completion of pooja depending upon how many days do the Pandits require to complete the specified chant of Gandmool dosh nivaran mantra which is Ashelsha nakshatra Ved mantra in this case.

Before we know nivaran mantra and before the day of start and completion for this pooja has been fixed, something else needs to be done which makes this pooja even more technical and more complicated. Water from 108 different places, soil from 108 different places and leaves of 108 different trees or plants are required in order to conduct this pooja without which this pooja is considered incomplete or not completed properly. The Pandits who have expertise in performing this pooja generally keep these things ready in their stock as it can be very difficult for a native to arrange these things at once. If the Pandits do not have it then either the native or the Pandits have to arrange it. Some Pandits have the opinion that arranging water, leaves and soil from 27 different sources is also sufficient for the sake of this pooja. But most of expert Pandits agree that this count should not be less than 27 sources which means water from 27 different sources, leaves from 27 different trees and soil from 27 different places is must in order to conduct Gandmool dosh nivaran pooja. The count of 27 stands for 27 nakshatras and the count of 108 stands for all 108 parts or padas of 27 nakshatras as each nakshatra has 4 padas and hence 27 nakshatras will have 108 padas. After making all these arrangements, this pooja can be started on the decided day.

The most important step in performing any kind of puja to rectify any dosh in a horoscope is to perform the chant of a Mantra specified to reduce the strength of that dosh and this chant amounts to a number of 125,000 in most of the cases and likewise a Gandmool Dosh nivaran puja should ideally include a chant of 125,000 Gandmool Dosh nivaran mantra which is Ashlesha nakshatra ved mantra in this example and rest of the procedure is built around this chant. To start with Gandmool Dosh nivaran puja, a specific day is chosen for the start and completion of this puja which is decided according to the birth nakshatra of the native. At the day of starting of this puja, a Sankalpam or resolution is taken by the Pandits which are usually 5 to 7 in number. In this Sankalpam, the head Pandit or the main Pandit takes an oath in front of Lord Shiva that he and his other assistant Pandits are going to perform a chant of 125,000 Gandmool Dosh nivaran mantras for a specific person who is the native and whose name, his father’s name and his family surname is also mentioned in Sankalpam. The names of the Pandits doing this chant are also mentioned, the days taken to complete this chant are also mentioned which are generally 7 to 10 days and the specific wishes required by the native as a result of this puja are also mentioned and this is the first step which starts a Gandmool Dosh nivaran puja. The specific wish asked as a result of this pooja is nivaran of Gandmool dosh in this case.

After this, all the Pandits start chanting Gandmool Dosh nivaran mantra on daily basis for about 8 to 10 hours a day and in such a way that they are able to complete the total chant of 125,000 mantras till the decided day of completion of this puja. The pundits keep on chanting the Gandmool Dosh nivaran mantra on daily basis till the day of the completion and they complete the committed chant of mantras on that day. After completion of chant of Gandmool Dosh nivaran mantra, the completion ceremony is arranged for the puja which can take about 2-3 hours if done with proper procedure. A puja for lord Shiva, goddess Parvati, Lord Ganesha and other members of Shiva family is performed first and many kinds of offerings like flowers, fruits, sweets, milk, curd, honey, desi ghee, sugar and many other things are offered to these gods and goddesses and the completion of the resolution or Sankalpam taken by the pandits is repeated and it is conveyed to the gods by pandits that they have completed the chant of 125,000 Gandmool Dosh nivaran mantra in the time promised by them and in the manner promised by them at the day of start and it is also mentioned that all this chant and puja has been done on behalf of their client whose name and other details are again mentioned and it is then preyed that their client should be blessed with the good results of this Gandmool Dosh nivaran puja since he has followed all the procedures for this puja and he has got this puja performed through pandits in order to rectify the Gandmool Dosh present in his horoscope. It should be noted here that this puja performed at the day of completion of Gandmool Dosh nivaran puja follows specific procedures and accordingly this puja and procedure can differ for different kind of doshas.

Things related to Ashelsha nakshatra and things related to some other specific planets are the donated and a mixture of water, leaves and soil from 108 or 27 different sources is then made and it is energized with the help of certain specific Vedic procedures and then this pooja is completed in its first phase. After completion of this puja, the blessings are taken from the gods and goddesses and then the final ceremony of Havana is started which is the final and a very important ceremony as this is a ceremony through which a direct connection between the native and the corresponding nakshatra lord or gods is established with the help of pandits. Havana is a very important and technical procedure and it should be done by expert pandits with great attention and care. After starting the Havana and after doing the necessary formalities, the chant of Gandmool Dosh nivaran mantra is again started and this time with the completion of each mantra, a sound of Swaaha or Swaha is chanted by the pandits and upon the chant of this sound of Swaha or Swaaha, certain specific things which form the constituents of Puja Samagri and which can vary from puja to puja are offered in a specific way to the holy fire which has been lit to perform the Havana for Gandmool Dosh nivaran puja. This process is repeated again and again and each time the pandits chant the sound of Swaaha or Swaha or Swaham, puja samagri is offered to the holy fire of Havana in a specific way. Once the specific chant of Gandmool Dosh nivaran mantra fixed for the Havana is completed, some other important mantras are chanted which may differ from puja to puja and here again the puja samagri is offered to the holy fire of Havana at the sound of Swaha or Swaaha at the completion of each mantra. A dry coconut is finally filled with certain specific things which may again be different for different pujas and this coconut is then placed in the holy fire of Havana as the final offering and with the chant of some specific mantras and the desired result is again preyed by the pandits on behalf of the native. The client or the native is then asked to complete 1, 3 or 7 circles around the Havana kund where each one of these circular movement is called a Pradakshina or a Parikarama and upon the completion of this Parikarma the Gandmool Dosh puja is completed for the Havana part. And though a Gandmool Dosh nivaran puja includes many other steps and procedures than the ones mentioned above, but the above mentioned steps are the most important steps of a Gandmool Dosh nivaran puja and they should be done and executed by expert and established pandits. Missing some of the important procedures or not doing them properly can reduce the desired effects of the puja and the native may not get the proper benefic effect from his Gandmool Dosh nivaran puja. After completing the Havana, the native then takes bath with the energized mixture of water, soil and leaves from 27 or 108 different sources and then he takes bath with ordinary water and with this, Gandmool dosh nivaran Pooja is complete.

There are some precautions which should be observed by the native during the running time of his Gandmool Dosh Nivaran Pooja otherwise he may not get proper results from such Gandmool Dosh Nivaran Puja. From the time of start of a Gandmool Dosh Nivaran Puja till the time of completion of this pooja, the native for whom this pooja is being performed should abstain from eating non vegetarian food of all kind including fish and egg, he should stay away from liquors and alcohols of all kinds and he should also stay away from smoking for all this time. Apart from this the native should also not make sexual contacts with any female including his own wife and in case of unmarried natives they should stay away from their girlfriends as long as the Gandmool Dosh Nivaran Puja is going on. The native should also not engage in any kinds of bad conducts of violence, hatred or any other kinds of conducts which are considered immoral during the running time of Gandmool Dosh Nivaran Puja. The native should try to connect himself to Gandmool Dosh Nivaran Pooja on daily basis which he can do by praying to Lord Shiva daily after taking bath and repeating the Sankalpam that the main Pandit had made on his behalf at the start of this pooja. The native should address Lord Shiva and say with his words or with his mind that he is getting a Gandmool Dosh Nivaran Pooja performed with a chant of 125,000 Mantras and this pooja is being performed at such and such place by a specific number of Pandits and that he is following all the procedures and precautions with complete dedication and devotion and that Lord Shiva should bless him with the best possible results for this pooja.

It should be noted here that a Gandmool Dosh Nivaran Puja can be done in the presence of the native as well as in the absence of the native and in case the native is unable to be personally present at the place of Gandmool Dosh Nivaran Puja, this pooja is conducted with the help of native’s photograph or Picture in which the native should be alone and no one else should be present in the picture and this picture should be as recent as possible. In this case, the main Pandit will take the sankalp for Gandmool Dosh Nivaran Pooja on behalf of the native in the presence of his photograph or picture. The name of native’s father and the surname of his family is spoken in the sankalpam and it is also mentioned by the main Pandit that this native is unable to attend to this pooja by means of his personal presence and hence a specific Pandit whose name and surname is mentioned, will be performing all the rituals to be performed by the native on behalf of the native. It should be noted here that this Pandit is one of the Pandits who are going to do a chant of 125,000 Gandmool Dosh nivaran mantra for the native. This way the rituals to be performed by the native at the starting day and completion day of Gandmool Dosh Nivaran Puja are performed by the chosen Pandit and it is conveyed by him on both of these days that he is performing these rituals on behalf of the native whose photograph is always kept present during the puja and it is used as a symbol of the native. For example, if the chosen Pandit is supposed to offer flower to Lord Shiva, he will first touch his hand carrying the flowers with the picture of the native and then he will offer those flowers to Lord Shiva and all other rituals are also performed likewise. It is important to note here that even if the native is personally not present for his Gandmool Dosh Nivaran Puja, he is strictly supposed to practice all the necessary and above mentioned precautions for his Gandmool Dosh Nivaran Puja, in whichever part of the world he may be present during the running time of such Gandmool Dosh Nivaran Pooja. The native should also keep on repeating his Sankalpam for Gandmool Dosh Nivaran Puja on daily basis as mentioned above and he should ask for the best results of this pooja.

Getting a Gandmool Dosh nivaran pooja performed certainly helps reducing the malefic effects of Gandmool Dosh formed in a horoscope, to a great extent. But it should be kept in mind that Gandmool Dosh is a different kind of dosh which means that the same puja is not done for all the natives like in case of many other defects and a different approach may be needed for different cases. Hence a Gandmool Dosh nivaran puja should only be conducted after properly analyzing the horoscope of the native and after determining the birth nakshatra which forms Gandmool Dosh in the horoscope of the native and then the day of completion of this pooja should be fixed when Moon visits the birth nakshatra of the native once again.
