According to its prevalent definition, if Mars is placed in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house of a horoscope, Manglik Dosh is formed in such horoscope. This defect is associated with delay in marriage, troubled marriages, disputes, separations, divorces, widowhood and many other disturbing events.
It means Mars has to be functionally malefic in a horoscope in order to form Manglik Dosh in such horoscope; and benefic Mars can’t form Manglik Dosh in a horoscope. Hence the refined definition of Manglik Dosh is; if malefic Mars is placed in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house of a horoscope, Manglik Dosh is formed in such horoscope.
Once the formation of Manglik Dosh is confirmed in a horoscope, the next thing to check is its strength. The strength of Manglik Dosh is checked through the placement of Mars in various signs, nakshatras and navamshas. Apart from that, the influences of benefic and malefic planets on Mars; the overall theme of the horoscope and the running times may also affect the strength of Manglik Dosh. Let’s look into these factors.
Starting with signs, Manglik Dosh may possess minimum strength when Mars is placed in Cancer since Mars is debilitated in this sign. This defect may be significant or strong but not very strong when Mars is placed in Taurus, Gemini, Virgo, Libra, Aquarius or Pisces. Manglik Dosh may become strong or very strong when Mars is placed in Aries, Leo, Scorpio, Sagittarius or Capricorn. Let’s take an example to understand this concept in a better manner.
Suppose malefic Mars forms Manglik Dosh in the seventh house of a horoscope in Taurus. Such Manglik Dosh may create various types of problem related to the marriage of this native; depending on his overall horoscope. Hence the native may witness delay in marriage and he may not get married till late in his life. In case such Manglik Dosh is supported by other malefic planets; the native may not get married till very late in his life or he may not get married at all.
Looking at a variation, suppose exalted Venus is placed in the fifth house in Pisces, a combination of Sun and Mercury is placed in the fourth house in Aquarius and Saturn is placed in the third house in Capricorn with benefic Moon. In this case, the native may get married after his age of 30 years; if the native is a male. In case the native is a female, the placement of Jupiter becomes important. If benefic Jupiter is placed in the second house of this horoscope in Sagittarius; the native may get married before the age of 28; if the native is a female. However, this placement of Jupiter may not help the male native get married sooner and his marriage may still happen after 30 years of his age.
Suppose malefic exalted Ketu is placed in the fifth house of this horoscope in Pisces along with exalted Venus; and malefic exalted Rahu is placed in the eleventh house in Virgo. The additional negativity added by Rahu and Ketu may delay the marriage of this native even more. Hence the native may not get married before his age of 35. If malefic Mars in the seventh house is retrograde and it is placed in Pisces navamsha of Krittika nakshatra; the native may not get married before his age of 40 years or he may not get married throughout his life; depending on the finer factors in the horoscope. The term ‘finer factors’ in this context means the placements of various planets in various nakshatras and navamshas.
It should be noted that when Mars goes retrograde, it may become more active than usual or less active than usual, related to some of its functions; depending on the overall horoscope. In this case, malefic retrograde Mars may become more interested in delaying the marriage of this native. Hence the native may not get married till his age of 40 years or throughout his life.
Let’s change the entire equation and see what may happen. Suppose malefic Mars forms Manglik Dosh in the seventh house of a horoscope in Taurus. Malefic Venus is placed in the sixth house in Aries along with exalted Sun; and debilitated Mercury is placed in the fifth house in Pisces. Saturn is placed in the second house in Sagittarius, benefic Moon is placed in the tenth house in Leo and benefic Jupiter is placed in the eleventh house in Virgo.
In this case, Manglik Dosh may not delay the marriage of this native. However, it may create serious problems in his marriage. Hence the native may have serious differences of opinion with his wife; which may lead to arguments, disagreements, disputes and fights between them. If the finer factors are also not supportive; such Manglik Dosh may break the first marriage of the native on account of serious compatibility problems between the couple.
At the same time, if malefic Rahu is placed in the first house of this horoscope in Scorpio and malefic Ketu is placed in the seventh house in Taurus along with Mars; the equation may become even more troublesome. In this case, the native may witness two or three broken marriages and he may settle in his third or fourth marriage; depending on the finer factors in his horoscope.
It should be noted that in general, Mars works as a partly benefic and partly malefic planet for Scorpio ascendant. The percentages of benefic and malefic parts of Mars may increase or decrease; depending on its placements in various houses, signs, nakshatras and navamshas; as well as depending on the influences of benefic and malefic planets on Mars; and on the overall theme of horoscope.
To have an idea, Mars may be 30 to 40% malefic and 60 to 70% benefic for Scorpio ascendant in general. However, it may become up to 90% benefic or 90% malefic; depending on the relevant factors as well as on the overall horoscope. The concept of malefic planets turning into benefic planets and benefic planets turning into malefic planets has been explained in the chapter ‘Vipreet Rajyoga’ in the revised edition (2020) of the book ‘Important Yogas in Vedic Astrology’ as well as in the revised edition (2020) of the book ‘Pitra Dosh – Ancestors are Calling’.
Since Mars is generally not suitable for a relationship like marriage. Even 30 to 40% malefic Mars may form Manglik Dosh. As its placements change in different nakshatras and navamshas within the same sign in a specific house of horoscope; it may become more malefic in percentage. In the present case, Mars placed in the seventh house may become 30 to 60% malefic; based on its placements in various nakshatras and navamshas within the sign of Taurus.
Let’s move on with the main topic. Looking at nakshatras, suppose malefic Mars forms Manglik Dosh in the seventh house of a horoscope in Taurus. The sign of Taurus features three nakshatras; Krittika, Rohini and Mrigashira. If Mars is placed in the Krittika nakshatra; such Manglik Dosh may create serious or very serious problems. This type of Manglik Dosh may be interested in breaking the marriage of the native as well as in delaying his marriage; depending on navamsha placements of Mars within Krittika.
If Mars is placed in Rohini nakshatra within the sign of Taurus; such Manglik Dosh may create significant or serious problems and it may not create vary serious type of problems. This type of Manglik Dosh may delay the marriage of the native and it may also break one or more than one marriage of the native.
When Mars is placed in Mrigashira nakshatra within the sign of Taurus; such Manglik Dosh may create serious or very serious problems. This type of Manglik Dosh may not delay the marriage of the native on its own and it may draw pleasure by troubling the native with a number of problems after his marriage. Mrigashira is ruled by Mars and Mars is strong in this nakshatra. Apart from that, Mrigashira is not supportive for matrimonial harmony in general. Hence such Manglik Dosh may break one, two or three marriages of the native; on account of various types of problems; depending on his overall horoscope.
Looking at navamshas; the sign of Taurus features 9 navamshas, ranging from Capricorn to Virgo. The first three navamshas; Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces are ruled by Krittika nakshatra. The next four navamshas from Aries to Cancer are ruled by Rohini. The last two navamshas; Leo and Virgo are ruled by Mrigashira.
When Mars is placed in Cancer navamsha; such Manglik Dosh may create significant problems. Among all 9 types of Manglik Dosh formed by Mars in the seventh house within the sign of Taurus; this is the least troublesome one. Hence if the overall horoscope of the native is supportive for marriage; the native may be able to save his first marriage; despite problems and setbacks.
When Mars is placed in Aquarius, Pisces, Taurus, Gemini or Virgo navamsha; the problems may be significant or serious. Mars is not strong in these signs though it may do well in most of them. Such Manglik Dosh may break one or two marriages of the native; depending on his overall horoscope.
When Mars is placed in Capricorn, Aries or Leo navamsha; the problems may be serious or very serious. Mars is strong in all these signs and it may cause significant damage. The placement of Mars in Capricorn navamsha may prove very troublesome for the native. Mars is exalted in Capricorn and Krittika is a sharp nakshatra. Hence this type of Manglik Dosh may break two or three marriages of the native; depending on his overall horoscope.
Between Aries and Leo; Mars is stronger in Aries. However, it may cause more damage when it is placed in Leo. This is because Aries navamsha is ruled by Rohini nakshatra; which is generally favourable for relationships like marriage. Leo navamsha is ruled by Mrigashira nakshatra. Mars rules this nakshatra and it is generally not favourable for matrimonial bliss as well as for harmony between the partners. Hence Mars may cause more damage in Leo navamsha, compared to Aries navamsha.
Looking at another variation, suppose the recent placements of Saturn and Moon are annulled. Suppose retrograde Saturn is placed in the twelfth house in Libra in Vishakha nakshatra and benefic Moon is placed in the fifth house in Pisces. In this case, the native may himself engage in an extramarital affair. Such affair may create a number of problems in his marriage and it may finally break his marriage.
Let’s see what such Manglik Dosh can do in a different type of horoscope. Suppose malefic Mars forms Manglik Dosh in the seventh house in Taurus in Capricorn navamsha of Krittika nakshatra. Suppose a malefic combination of exalted Sun, Venus and Mercury is placed in the sixth house, malefic Ketu is placed in the first house in Scorpio and malefic Rahu is placed in the seventh house with Mars. Suppose Saturn is placed in the second house in Sagittarius and a benefic combination of Moon and retrograde Jupiter is placed in the fifth house in Pisces.
In this case, the native may lose one or two wives to death; depending on the finer factors. Even if he settles in his third or fourth marriage; his wife may suffer from significant or serious health problems. Manglik Dosh with this type of horoscope may not delay the marriage of the native but it may take pleasure in killing or physically troubling the wife of this native.
You see, though the same Manglik Dosh is formed in the horoscope but the results may be very different or opposite; depending on the overall theme of horoscope. Hence the overall theme of horoscope should be checked properly.
After this, the impact of running times should also be checked. The term ‘running times’ in this context means planetary periods, commonly known as Mahadashas.
Let’s take an example to understand the relevance of running times. Suppose malefic Mars forms Manglik Dosh in the seventh house of a horoscope in Taurus and malefic Rahu is also placed in the seventh house. The 7 year planetary period of Mars is followed by 18 years of Rahu period. Hence both these planets rule the planetary periods for 25 years; once the planetary period of Mars begins.
Suppose such Manglik Dosh is capable of breaking three or four marriages of the native; with the support of overall horoscope. The maximum quantum of damage indicated by such Manglik Dosh may be realized; when the planetary period of Mars in in effect. This is because during this period, Manglik Dosh may gain additional strength and hence it may trouble the native with maximum possible strength.
Taking an example, suppose the planetary period of Mars hits this native at his age of 1 year. The planetary period of Mars lasts for 7 years; followed by the planetary period of Rahu for 18 years. It means the native will be under the effect of these periods during his age of 1 to 26 years. Since most of these years don’t support serious problems related to marriage, the native may not face the most serious problems indicated by such Manglik Dosh. Therefore, the planetary periods of Mars and Rahu have hit this native at irrelevant times, in this case. It means instead of facing 3 or 4 failed marriages; the native may face one failed marriage; provided he gets married after his age of 26.
On the other hand, if the planetary periods of Mars and Rahu hit this native at relevant times, such Manglik Dosh may unleash its optimum potential and malefic Rahu may also join. Suppose the planetary periods of Mars and Rahu are in effect during this native’s age of 20 and 45. In this case, the native may face the worst type of problems that this malefic combination is capable of creating. Therefore, the planetary periods of Mars and Rahu have hit this native at relevant times, in this case.
When the planetary period of a benefic planet is in effect; the impact of this malefic combination may reduce significantly. When the planetary period of a malefic planet other than Mars and Rahu is in effect; the impact of such Manglik Dosh may increase though it may not reach its optimum potential. Maximum damage may be witnessed when the planetary period of Mars or Rahu is in effect. Rahu is exalted in Taurus and malefic Rahu can create serious problems in combination with malefic Mars. Hence the planetary period of Rahu may also prove very troublesome for the marriage of the native.
