Gana Koot carries 6 points or Gunas in the system of Gun Milaan. Different number of points are assigned for Gana matching, based on how the Ganas of male and female match with each other; according to the rules of Gun Milaan.
The first set of Gunas is called Sattva. This set represents qualities like benevolence, harmony, goodness, positivity, truth, serenity, balance, peacefulness, virtuousness and other likewise qualities. This set of qualities is associated with Dev Gana (gods). Therefore, if a nakshatra falls under the class of Dev Gana; it means such nakshatra may exhibit some or all of these qualities; depending on the placements of various benefic or malefic planets in it.
The second set is called Rajas. This set represents qualities like passion, activity, self-centeredness; being egoistic, individualizing, driven, moving and dynamic; as well as other likewise qualities. This set of qualities is associated with Manava Gana (humans). Therefore, if a nakshatra falls under the class of Manava Gana; it means such nakshatra may exhibit some or all of these qualities; depending on the placements of various benefic or malefic planets in it.
The third set is called Tamas. This set represents qualities like imbalance, disorder, chaos, anxiety, apathy, delusion, inertia, lethargy; being impure, destructive, negative, dull, inactive, violent, vicious and ignorant; as well as other likewise qualities. This set of qualities is associated with Rakshas Gana (demons). Therefore, if a nakshatra falls under the class of Rakshas Gana; it means such nakshatra may exhibit some or all of these qualities; depending on the placements of various benefic or malefic planets in it.
It can be seen that the qualities represented by Deva Gana and Manava Gana either bear resemblances or they may complement one another. Hence a cross-match between Deva Gana and Manava Gana is considered good. It can also be seen that the qualities represented by Rakshas Gana either don’t match with those represented by Dev Gana and Manava Gana; or they oppose such qualities. Hence a cross-match between Rakshasa Gana and Manava or Dev Gana is considered bad.
Due to possessing same or similar qualities; each Gana may do well or very well when matched with the same Gana. Hence Dev-Dev, Manava-Manava and Rakshas-Rakshas matches carry 6 out of 6 points. Dev and Manava Gana may also do well in cross Gana matches between these two. Hence Dev-Manava and Manava-Dev matches are also considered good. Accordingly, they carry 6 and 5 points respectively; where the first part represents the Gana of male. Here again, the match is considered better, if the Gana of male is superior to that of female; in case it is a cross-match between Dev and Manava Gana.
It may seem partial that superior Gana for male is favoured, like in case of some other koots. The reason once again lies with the needs of the old times. A male was not only supposed to assume the role of a husband in marriage; he was also supposed to assume the role of a father. In the deepest sense, the process of Kanyadaan through which the father of bride hands her over to the groom; means that the groom should take care of her and protect her; like he (father) did. At the same time, he advices her daughter to respect and follow her husband; like she respected and followed him (father). Since the husband was supposed to do the job of a protector and guide also; he was supposed be better than the wife.
Let’s look at this aspect from another angle. It meant that almost every father wanted husband for his daughter, who was better or much better than her in various aspects. Since the koots were good at indicating whether or not and in which aspects; a male under consideration for marriage with her daughter was better than her; this process helped one such father find desired match for her daughter. When we look at it like this, this aspect may not look that much biased.
Even in this day and age; many fathers may desire that the husbands of their daughters should be more capable than them. Likewise, many female natives may also desire that their husbands should be more capable compared to them. In the old times; it was more of a necessity. In the present times; it is more a matter of choice or preference. Regardless of the times and factors which influence this desire; the system of Ashtakoot Milaan, commonly known as Gun Milaan may prove helpful.
Hence this system assigned more points for various koots if the male performed better than female during the matching of such koots. It was based more on requirement and choice of most people; than on partiality. Taking an example, if the times change and the priorities of people also change; the point system should also be changed. For instance, if most people want that wives should be more capable than husbands in most aspects; especially those related to finances, guidance and security; the scoring system should be revised. Considering Gana matching for example; if female’s Gana is Dev and that of male is Manava; 6 out of 6 points may be assigned. On the other hand, if male’s Gana is Dev and female’s Gana is Manava; 5 out of 6 points may be assigned.
Such Gana Dosh may create a number of problems in the marriage. However, the tendencies shown through Moon signs and Moon nakshatras are not the decisive ones and there are a number of factors in each horoscope, which may significantly or completely change these tendencies. Taking an example, suppose Moon is placed in the tenth house of male native’s horoscope in Leo in Magha nakshatra. Scorpio rises as ascendant in this case. Suppose within Scorpio, Anuradha nakshatra rises in the ascendant.
Moving ahead, suppose benefic Jupiter is placed in the first house of this horoscope in Scorpio in Anuradha nakshatra. The equation may completely change with this placement. Jupiter is the most Sattwic planet among navagraha and it represent qualities like kindness, benevolence, hope, faith, optimism, intelligence, spiritual growth, wisdom and many other likewise qualities. When a planet like benefic Jupiter is placed in the first house of a horoscope in a friendly sign like Scorpio and in a Dev nakshatra like Anuradha; the overall personality of the native may become highly Sattwic.
As mentioned many times, any planet which is placed in the first house of a horoscope gains extra strength and it may influence the overall personality of the native, more than any other planet in the horoscope. As a combined result of all these factors; the male native may become highly Sattwic in nature, which means he may possess a number of qualities exhibited by gods. You see, just by changing two factors, this male’s horoscope shows Sattwic tendencies which may be higher than even those represented by female’s horoscope. Hence Gana Dosh may not cause any problems in this case; unless there are other factors in the horoscopes, which are troublesome.
Let’s consider female native’s horoscope. Suppose benefic Moon is placed in the fourth house of her horoscope in Cancer in Pushya nakshatra and Bharani nakshatra rises in the ascendant, in the sign of Aries. Pushya is Dev nakshatra and Bharani is Manava nakshatra. Hence the overall personality of this female native may feature strong traits of Dev as well as Manava Gana.
Apart from that, both natives have horoscopes where ascendants are ruled by Mars. In addition to that, the male native is under strong influence of Jupiter and the female native is under strong influence of Moon, since Moon is strong in Cancer. Looking at the lords of Moon signs, male’s Moon sign Leo is ruled by Sun and female’s Moon sign Cancer is ruled by Moon. Combining all this facts; we get the results that the male native is under strong influence of Sun, Jupiter and Mars whereas the female native is under strong influence of Moon and Mars. Sun, Moon, Jupiter and Mars do very well with each other. Hence Gana Dosh may not create even mild problems in this case; unless there are serious planetary disturbances related to marriage in both horoscopes.
