Pitra dosh is probably the most widely misinterpreted concept of Vedic Jyotish as many of the present day astrologers describe it as the curse of ancestors which is troubling the native and accordingly they suggest remedies to pacify and please the ancestors so that such ancestors may take back their curse. For this reason, such astrologers recommend to their clients that they should get Pitra dosh puja performed at places like Haridwar, Badrinath Dham, Gaya Ji or Trayambkeshwar temple in Nasik or in Ujjain in order to rectify Pitra dosh present in their horoscopes. These astrologers suggest that Shraadh Karmas, pooja and charities should be done at these places in order to pacify the ancestors. Over a period of time, many people have done these rituals at the above mentioned religious places and most of them have not benefitted from such rituals at all and such natives have continued their search for proper remedies and puja which can actually ractify Pitra dosh present in their horoscope. Many of my clients and readers have asked me this question again and again and many of them have requested me to write an article on this topic and hence today we will discuss this issue and we will see as to what kind of pooja should actually be performed in order to rectify pitra dosh present in a horoscope and how should this pooja be performed.
Before moving ahead with Pitra dosh nivaran puja, let’s first understand that Pitra dosh in most of the cases is not the curse of ancestors and in reality it is formed in a horoscope due to bad karmas done by the ancestors of the native and the native has to pay for these bad karmas. Hence the ancestors of the native are not cursing him but they are themselves cursed and therefore Pitra dosh nivaran pooja should not be aimed pacifying the ancestors but it should be aimed at relieving the ancestors from the karmic debt of one or more than one planets which are making Pitra dosh in the horoscope of the native and which are direct indicators of the kind of karmic debt which has been formed on the family line of the native. It should be noted here that out of all kinds of Pitra doshas which can be formed in a horoscope and which have been discussed in details through various articles available in this section of the website, only the Pitra dosh formed by a malefic Sun placed in ninth house of a horoscope is the one which can sometimes but not always be formed due to the curse of the ancestors of the native which means that the native in his previous life or native’s ancestors did not performed the after death rituals of their fathers and forefathers due to which such ancestors had to suffer from various problems and accordingly such ancestors cursed the native and his family line. All other kinds of Pitra doshas formed by different planets among navagraha other than Sun are formed due to bad karmas done by the ancestors of the native and their formation has nothing to do with the curse of native’s ancestors.
Coming to the puja which is performed to rectify the malefic effects of Pitra dosh formed in a horoscope, it should be noted here that there is no single fixed puja to rectify Pitra dosh present in a horoscope and a Pitra dosh nivaran puja can be different for different natives. In order to find as to what kind of puja should be performed for niavaran of Pitra dosh in a horoscope, it should first be checked from the horoscope as to which malefic planet is forming Pitra dosh in the horoscope and once that malefic planet is detected then a Pitra dosh nivaran pooja should be performed for that planet in order to rectify Pitra dosh present in the horoscope or in order to reduce the strength of such Pitra dosh present in the horoscope. This is the most important step which should be properly conducted before performing a Pitra dosh nivaran puja because not knowing the exact cause of Pitra dosh in a horoscope will simply lead to some kind of puja which is not meant to rectify such Pitra dosh and accordingly such pooja will not help much or help at all. Therefore the malefic planet forming Pitra dosh in a horoscope should first be detected and then a Pitra dosh nivaran puja should be performed to pacify that planet so that the strength of such Pitra dosh may be reduced in the horoscope because once the malefic planet forming Pitra dosh in the horoscope has been pacified, the negativity of such planet as well as the strength of Pitra dosh formed by that planet will reduce.
Once we know the planet forming Pitra dosh in a horoscope, the process of reducing the negativity of this planet as well as the process of providing strength to Sun or ninth house of horoscope if possible, should be the next step. These goals can be achieved with the combined application of pooja, gemstones, yantras and some other astrological remedies but for the sake of this article, we will only discuss the pooja which should be performed for nivaran of Pitra dosh in a horoscope. After knowing the planet which is forming Pitra dosh in the horoscope, a pooja with the Ved mantra of that planet should be conducted with specific codes and procedures. Let us assume that Rahu is forming Pitra dosh in a horoscope and accordingly the Pitra dosh nivaran pooja in this case will be performed to pacify negative effects of Rahu or in other words, Rahu pooja will be the Pitra dosh nivaran puja in this case. For the sake of better understanding we will consider Rahu as the planet that forms Pitra dosh in the horoscope and accordingly we will discuss the Puja for Rahu.
The most important step in performing any kind of puja to rectify any dosh in a horoscope is to perform the chant of a Mantra specified to reduce the strength of that dosh and this chant amounts to a number of 125,000 in most of the cases. For example, a Pitra dosh nivaran puja should ideally include a chant of 125,000 Pitra dosh nivaran mantra which is Rahu ved mantra in this example and rest of the procedure is built around this chant. To start with Pitra dosh nivaran puja, a specific day is chosen for the start and completion of this puja which is decided according to the horoscope of the native. At the day of starting of this puja, a Sankalpam or resolution is taken by the Pandits which are usually 5 to 7 in number. In this Sankalpam, the head Pandit or the main Pandit takes an oath in front of Lord Shiva that he and his other assistant Pandits are going to perform a chant of 125,000 Pitra dosh nivaran mantras for a specific person who is the native and whose name, his father’s name and his family surname is also mentioned in Sankalpam. The names of the Pandits doing this chant are also mentioned, the days taken to complete this chant are also mentioned which are generally 5 to10 days for this pooja, and the specific wishes required by the native as a result of this puja are also mentioned and this is the first step which starts a Pitra dosh nivaran puja.
After this, all the Pandits start chanting Pitra dosh nivaran mantra on daily basis for about 8 to 10 hours a day and in such a way that they are able to complete the total chant of 125,000 mantras till the decided day of completion of this puja. The pundits keep on chanting the Pitra dosh nivaran mantra on daily basis till the day of the completion and they complete the committed chant of mantras on that day. After completion of chant of Pitra dosh nivaran mantra, the completion ceremony is arranged for the puja which can take about 2-3 hours if done with proper procedure. A puja for lord Shiva, goddess Parvati, Lord Ganesha and other members of Shiva family is performed first and many kinds of offerings like flowers, fruits, sweets, milk, curd, honey, desi ghee, sugar and many other things are offered to these gods and goddesses and the completion of the resolution or Sankalpam taken by the pandits is repeated and it is conveyed to the gods by pandits that they have completed the chant of 125,000 Pitra dosh nivaran mantra in the time promised by them and in the manner promised by them at the day of start and it is also mentioned that all this chant and puja has been done on behalf of their client whose name and other details are again mentioned and it is then preyed that their client should be blessed with the good results of this Pitra dosh nivaran puja since he has followed all the procedures for this puja and he has got this puja performed through pandits in order to rectify the Pitra dosh present in his horoscope. It should be noted here that this puja performed at the day of completion of Pitra dosh nivaran puja follows specific procedures and accordingly this puja and procedure can differ for different kind of doshas.
Things related to the planet forming Pitra dosh in the horoscope which is Rahu in present example are then donated with Sankalpam and then certain other specific things are donated by the native to the Pandits and through these pandits, these are conveyed to the ancestors of the native for whom this pooja is being performed. A Sankalmpam is again made by the main pandit which says that they have done this specific pooja to rectify Pitra dosh present in the horoscope of the native and that the native is also offering a variety of goods in order to reduce the pains of his ancestors and that the gods should relieve the ancestors of the native from this karmic debt and that the ancestors of the native should go to good worlds and live happily after getting free from this karmic debt. Then the blessings of the ancestors of the native are asked by the Pandits on behalf of the native and it is mentioned by the pandits that the native has done this specific puja and charity in order to relieve them ( native’s ancestors ) from their karmic debt and that they should bless the native for his noble act of getting this pooja performed in order to relieve his ancestors from their karmic debt.
After completion of this puja, the blessings are taken from the gods and goddesses and then the final ceremony of Havana is started which is the final and a very important ceremony as this is a ceremony through which a direct connection between the native and the corresponding planets or gods is established with the help of pandits. Havana is a very important and technical procedure and it should be done by expert pandits with great attention and care. After starting the Havana and after doing the necessary formalities, the chant of Pitra dosh nivaran mantra is again started and this time with the completion of each mantra, a sound of Swaaha or Swaha is chanted by the pandits and upon the chant of this sound of Swaha or Swaaha, certain specific things which form the constituents of Puja Samagri and which can vary from puja to puja are offered in a specific way to the holy fire which has been lit to perform the Havana for Pitra dosh nivaran puja. This process is repeated again and again and each time the pandits chant the sound of Swaaha or Swaha or Swaham, puja samagri is offered to the holy fire of Havana in a specific way. Once the specific chant of Pitra dosh nivaran mantra fixed for the Havana is completed, some other important mantras are chanted which may differ from puja to puja and here again the puja samagri is offered to the holy fire of Havana at the sound of Swaha or Swaaha at the completion of each mantra. A dry coconut is finally filled with certain specific things which may again be different for different pujas and this coconut is then placed in the holy fire of Havana as the final offering and with the chant of some specific mantras and the desired result is again preyed by the pandits on behalf of the native. The client or the native is then asked to complete 1, 3 or 7 circles around the Havana kund where each one of these circular movement is called a Pradakshina or a Parikarama and upon the completion of this Parikarma the Pitra dosh puja is completed. And though a Pitra dosh nivaran puja includes many other steps and procedures than the ones mentioned above, but the above mentioned steps are the most important steps of a Pitra dosh nivaran puja and they should be done and executed by expert and established pandits. Missing some of the important procedures or not doing them properly can reduce the desired effects of the puja and the native may not get the proper benefic effect from his Pitra dosh nivaran puja.
There are some precautions which should be observed by the native during the running time of his Pitra Dosh Nivaran Pooja otherwise he may not get proper results from such Pitra Dosh Nivaran Puja. From the time of start of a Pitra Dosh Nivaran Puja till the time of completion of this pooja, the native for whom this pooja is being performed should abstain from eating non vegetarian food of all kind including fish and egg, he should stay away from liquors and alcohols of all kinds and he should also stay away from smoking for all this time. Apart from this the native should also not make sexual contacts with any female including his own wife and in case of unmarried natives they should stay away from their girlfriends as long as the Pitra Dosh Nivaran Puja is going on. The native should also not engage in any kinds of bad conducts of violence, hatred or any other kinds of conducts which are considered immoral during the running time of Pitra Dosh Nivaran Puja. The native should try to connect himself to Pitra Dosh Nivaran Pooja on daily basis which he can do by praying to Lord Shiva daily after taking bath and repeating the Sankalpam that the main Pandit had made on his behalf at the start of this pooja. The native should address Lord Shiva and say with his words or with his mind that he is getting a Pitra Dosh Nivaran Pooja performed with a chant of 125,000 Veda Mantras of Jupiter and this pooja is being performed at such and such place by a specific number of Pandits and that he is following all the procedures and precautions with complete dedication and devotion and that Lord Shiva should bless him with the best possible results for this pooja.
It should be noted here that a Pitra Dosh Nivaran Puja can be done in the presence of the native as well as in the absence of the native and in case the native is unable to be personally present at the place of Pitra Dosh Nivaran Puja, this pooja is conducted with the help of native’s photograph or Picture in which the native should be alone and no one else should be present in the picture and this picture should be as recent as possible. In this case, the main Pandit will take the sankalp for Pitra Dosh Nivaran Pooja on behalf of the native in the presence of his photograph or picture. The name of native’s father and the surname of his family is spoken in the sankalpam and it is also mentioned by the main Pandit that this native is unable to attend to this pooja by means of his personal presence and hence a specific Pandit whose name and surname is mentioned, will be performing all the rituals to be performed by the native on behalf of the native. It should be noted here that this Pandit is one of the Pandits who are going to do a chant of 125,000 Guru Veda mantra for the native. This way the rituals to be performed by the native at the starting day and completion day of Pitra Dosh Nivaran Puja are performed by the chosen Pandit and it is conveyed by him on both of these days that he is performing these rituals on behalf of the native whose photograph is always kept present during the puja and it is used as a symbol of the native. For example, if the chosen Pandit is supposed to offer flower to Lord Shiva, he will first touch his hand carrying the flowers with the picture of the native and then he will offer those flowers to Lord Shiva and all other rituals are also performed likewise. It is important to note here that even if the native is personally not present for his Pitra Dosh Nivaran Puja, he is strictly supposed to practice all the necessary and above mentioned precautions for his Pitra Dosh Nivaran Puja, in whichever part of the world he may be present during the running time of such Pitra Dosh Nivaran Pooja. The native should also keep on repeating his Sankalpam for Pitra Dosh Nivaran Puja on daily basis as mentioned above and he should ask for the best results of this pooja.
Getting a Pitra dosh nivaran pooja performed along with the other necessary astrological remedies certainly helps reducing the malefic effects of Pitra dosh formed in a horoscope, to a great extent. But it should be kept in mind that Pitra dosh is a different kind of dosh which means that the same remedies or the same pujas are not done for all the natives like in case of many other defects and a different approach may be needed for different cases. Hence a Pitra dosh nivaran puja should only be conducted after properly analyzing the horoscope of the native and after determining the malefic planet which forms Pitra dosh in the horoscope of the native.
